Old Newcastle boozers

Brilliant thread, loads of memories (good and bad) lol

Darnell, Greyhound, Hodgys arms, Inn On The Park, Bay Horse, Dodd's Arms, Balmoral. The Blue Star Club and The Magpie opposite SJP. Carters (above the Lowther), Fish bar, Cordwainers. Got my first under-age drinking rap in the Cafe Royal lol, Eldon Grill, Butlers. I could go on forever lol

Anybody remember the old Labour club around the corner from The Strawberry? Sunday afternoons (12 till 2 lol) were mental, loads of building workers playing bingo and one game used to take all afternoon cos there was a song for every number called and nobody shut up singing lol, even when the strippers were on.

Aye, the corwdwainers was the one in the new eldon square.
What about the tuxedo junction with the phones on the table, ha ha. and then the supposedly gay bar the eldon grill I think it was, not that I ever went in like, well just once but I was with wor lass.

right then, here is my confession of which i am not proud. back in the 90's, the early part of was just a haze myself and a few mates used to sup quite a bit in the barley mow. one sat night i was hammered on snakebite, i can't remember most of the night but when i woke up on sunday to get ready to go out for a pint i noticed a tankard in my leather jacket pocket.
Well, that tankard belonged to the old guy who used to be a regular in the barley mow, anyone remember him? he used to sing and play the harp. i felt really bad about what i had done so decided to take it back. when we got to the pub the whispers and angry talk was of this tankard. there was no way i was going to hand it back as i would have been linched so i hid it in the gents toilets. we did spend the rest of sunday in the pub and i nearly won killer pool but missed my last shot that would have won it for me, so i say what goes around comes around.

Does anyone remember the name of the boozer downstairs from the Eldon ?

This is a long running question.

Please help.

Could it be the Basement?

racked my brains but kept getting mixed uo with the bar bellow the Swallow Hotel which i think was called mirrows? and was a bit of a meeting bar before heading off "down the market"

Thinking about it, thats not right:mad: i can only remember it first as the goldfish bowl, which i was warned was a gay bar! then when it became FM's which if i remember right had a "live" dj in the middle broadcasting , im sure someone like Paul Macenna was one of them, that or he was the dj in Top Shop on the Eldon bridge, my memories are fading fast now

think you missed the fish bar and the pineapple my first pint was in the barley mow in gateshead at 16 was working at shephards of gateshead them were the days sneaking in sitting in the corner

When I worked in town mid 80s we used to drink in The Pineapple after work. Good crowd we had, you pitched in what you had but drank with everyone else out of the funds, happy days. Manager used to put up sarnies and stuff for us.

There was the Pig and Whistle in the big market, I remember it used to be heaving when it first opened. We used to call it the sober bar as it used to take yer about an hour to get served.
