sea angler vs TSf

Back in the mid 60s. I used to travel down to Plymouth 4 and 5 times a year just for the wreck fishing. The boat we always used was the "Sunlit Waters" skippered by Ray Parsons. A pal of mine Sid Thompson no longer with us, used to go with me. On the way back one day I said to Sid, there must be wrecks off the N.E. coast and if there are there must be fish in them. Charter boat skippers in those days were very thin on the ground, and the ones that were didn't have the equipment needed to find the wrecks. I spoke to some of the seine net boat skippers trying to convince them to take us (in their eyes nutcases) to try the wrecks.
Word got out about what I had in mind, in those days I had a tackle shop in Wallsend, Bill Temple who used to have a tackle shop in Bedlington wrote to Sea Angler Magazine accusing me of having a hole in my head, and that wreck fishing off our coast would be a waste of time, one of the top angling writers of the time also said that because of the fast tides, sand, mud etc. all of the wrecks would be broken up or silted over.
I took a real hammering from all the "non believers". Eventually I convinced the skipper of a small seine netter to take us out, it cost us £2 each for the day, after a few trips we "cracked it", taking some good cod and ling, all on jiggers.
To try and convince the "doubting thomases" I ran a competition using 6 ports and commercial boats, the winning fish a cod, came from Eyemouth, and, if I remember correctly weighed about 29 lbs. and was taken by one of the Nixon brothers, I think it was Alan. He won a weeks holiday for two in Southern Ireland.
Because we took no notice of the people who didn't believe,we now have wreck fishing off our coast, I am still convinced that we have a huge variety of species to be caught. but methods of fishing would have to change to take them.
Tight Lines.

Funny I was talking to a salmon netter/lobster potter at the weekend and He explained to me that there are a hell of alot more species out there, than people care to think about, if only they tried, they have had swordfish, tuna, thick lipped and Golden Grey mullett, Porbeagle, Tope, Smooth hound etc etc etc, all in the not to distant past.
Got me some killer information off him, regarding, Turbot the size of bin lids and bass to 10lb....Just waiting for the right tides to have a go.
Regarding Matchman, I think that some people have got to understand, that a lot of the discussions regarding Sea Angler on here have turned into a slagging off free for all, and the lad (understandably) is going to defend the company he works for.
I have met Paul and spoken to him on a number of occasions, regarding fishing, and I can tell you that he does not have an issue with 'North East' lads, and is as as helpful and genuine a person as you could meet...

Just finished reading this thread from start to finish, some very interesting things...few i agree with and few i dont.

Agree both mags repeat year after year but still worth a read and great for starters.

Agree that other species to be caught in the NE but i for one am not intrested in anything other than wreck fishing, i go to Scotland for Skate and Tope, west coast for bass etc

Disagree that its all the goverments fault, man..any man will make as much money as they can as quick as they can and if that means dumping colaie over the side to amke room for monk fish or haddock it will happen

Disagree with the comments of blinkered NE boat anglers, the lads around my berth are the same as me, keep 3,4,5 cod a trip and put the rest back, we would return alot more but the swim bladders go on most ling, i would say this yar i ahev kept 35-40 cod and ling and put 300+ back...more going back now as i have a freezer draw full and thats my stopping point.

Anyway thats my views even if its worth nowt so i am a no body just a every week fisherman

Shame really though.

i used to get them too, but after getting one once i reconised a picture that was of a man with big grin and big cod that i remembered was on the front page about a year earlier.

i aint starting a war by the way i am just wanting to know the opinion of local anglers of the content accuracy of the magazines...the practical local application ...i do enjoy reading sea angler having subscribed for a year particularly the chris clark series ... so thats why i started the post ...just to see what the local reception on the info available in both mags ...

There is no substitute for actually going out fishing. That's the way in which you learn. Meeting people and fishing with them. Theres a lot of good anglers in the NE at most clubs. Tynemouth, Bedlington, Newbiggin, W/Bay, Sluice etc...

Most will give you advice If you join. Alot of people start off and never really progress due to the fact they go out by themselves. Some are happy, some moan theres no fish etc.. All depends on how competent yu want to be.

The Mags point you in the right direction esp for beginners or even sometimes more experienced anglers. It's just a taster though. You don't go fishing in the house.

Is that you openly admitting you've just posted stuff purely with the intention of winding people up, knowing that this thread will end up the same as all the previous magazine threads?
