3B rockling (female)

Sorry Liam that's not a female 3B. There are no external colour differences between male and female 3Bs and they should all look like Andy's fish. Sorry mate. It could be a shore rockling but that last pic looks like it may have five beards. Are you sure you didn't mean to say 5B Rockling?

Hi mike. In all honesty me and Andy were both 50/50 as to whether it was a 3female 3 beard or not - the reason being is we've been told the female pattern is not as distinct as the male and the fish above does have a faded mottled pattern, a flattened head and bigger dorsal fins than the other shore rockling i've posted. I think given your feedback we can conclude its not a 3B anyway.

I must admit i didnt notice 5 beards on it, only 3, though i can see what you mean from the picture so you may be right - unfortunately i cant comment as i dont have a better picture.

I'll leave the final verdict up to you anyway mate.

Cheers

That mottled pattern is often seen on shore rocklings, sometimes it's a lot more vivid than that. It's not to do with being male or female just variations between individual fish. What is common throughout them all though is that when they have spots they are light coloured on a dark background whereas on a 3B they are always dark spots on a light background. Your fish is definately not a 3B so I would say it's either another shore rockling or it's a 5B if those lumps on the head are barbels rather than nostrils. As you are not sure about the barbels then I will go with shore rockling. Ok with you?

Deffo a Shore Rockling, that line of spots which then curves up towards the front of the dorsal fin is a distinctive identifying feature
