Cheers chris, aye it was one of my targets today. I didn't know what type, but mike says grey gurnard.

Cheers mike, I posted the pic when I was still on the pier, so couldn't look up what type. I've found this online now

Tub gurnards have the more rounded or blunt dorsal fin of the three main species. The scales are small and the pectoral fins extend past the vent.

The red gurnard carries fairly large scales, with the pectoral fins only just reaching the vent. The dorsal fin is much sharper in profile and higher when extended above the back than the tub and grey.

Grey gurnards have a slimmer body shape than the red and tub. The lateral line has small boney scutes running along it’s length and the pectoral fins are short not reaching the vent.

Since I troubled the scorers... Managed a Launce this evening after a flyer from work, then Karma intervened, the heavens opened and I was soaked to the skin within moments and made a very soggy drive back from Seaham to Durham...

It's a Common Blenny.
Well done on the ling that's a great catch from the shore I've only ever caught one in my life and that was in the Hebrides. Nice one mate.

Yeah could be a herring but the photo does not show the fin positions clearly so can't really tell for sure but I am happy to put it down as a herring if you are.
