thanks for your replies dave and mick you seem to know what i.m saying.how can we change it, get it back to the times when you knew when you went out in a heavy sea for a sesh you would bag up [after all we are sea anglers and there nothing better than getting a sh\t load of cod, one after another, thats why we fish]i don,t go out in mid winter with a bag full of bait ,hoping to catch a few whiting .i want to catch a big cod ,now and then.the point is it,s getting rarer and rarer to get one why, not us ,we only take a minute amount for the pot its every body else in the E.U.hoovering every fish up they can get ,do you really think a spanish trawler gives a toss about our fishing quotas.do what norway does put a limit of at least 12 miles on our coast line.only then can we go back to the[GOOD OLD DAYS]

I love the fact that I have to justify my post count to certain members of this forum...there's more than you that's commented BTW and it makes me laugh that I must offend people in such a way
For the record I work 8 hours a day in an office and I actually hold a supervisory role, but because it's such a sh*t job I spend an inordinate amount of time on the 'net...for that I make no apologies

...as for reaching 2000 posts in a record time I look forward to it and the subsequent badge that Jim and the other Mod's will present me when I do 
Totally agree from a personal point of view...only a relative newbie and I've caught half a dozen codling in less than a dozen proper sessions so my catch rate is quite good :red:

Can we see things get back to what they were?
Well the scientists think so...they are predicting a return to cod stocks close to what they were in the 80's by 2009/10.
I'm with Mick as far as fishin goes. I dont fish competetively or because I am hungry...I fish because it does not invove work and is a time for winding down. ( although in my case i hope my radio still works at sea)
What can we do to help get things back to whta they were...its simple...spend fifteen minutes responding to defra and let them know we exist. Its the only way we will see any change. It will probaby take less time than you have spent reading this thread.
And most importantly it will probably be the best/only opportunity you have to get your personal feelings known.
I want to be catching like I did in the 80's...and in the 30's I want my son to be able catch like his dad.... as opposed to looking back at some faded photo's and saying those were the days.
If you are unsure of how to respond Pm me or leon or any moderator ...we/they will point you in the right direction and help you have your say direct to those who have the power to change things. Its worth a few minutes to hopefully help ensure the future of our hobby.

hi years ago i can remember getting ideal conditions and still blanking i go pleasure fishing full stop , if i dont catch out i am dissapointed a little but so what ,what do you go fishing for peace and quite , fresh air, fishing is not cheap but on the other hand it still dos,nt cost an arm and a leg to put a baited hook in the water mussell as bait, razors cheap enough,its the fishing stocks that ****es me of its all the arguments that arrive with fishing and casting

Davyred - you're clearly a little silly in the head - because you missed the poinrt completely. I know enough anglers, from tynemouth, whitley bay clubs etc, I know that enough of them don't give 2 hoots about putting others in the picture with regard to where is fishing. They are sooner to spit their dummy when you share a skeer which is 60 yards long. One very well known angler out of Tynemouth was recorded tirading at a lad during a winter league match 2 weeks ago on slatey gut because he was being 'haversacked' even though they were 20 yards apart. I would put the footage on youtube but im sure it would shatter the illusions you hold about your 'old time north east anglers' - and believe me - this guy is percieved as the very symbol of this. His behavior was disgusting.
Thing is Rex i agree with you, just the people on this forum don't want to hear it. I'll prob ony post a fish if its a monster but apart from that i won't. I'll tell anyone where i'm going fishing if they ask, or want any advice but i'm by no way an expert and my word isnt gospel. My best advice to anyone is fish certain marks all the time, learn them and then try new ones. You don't need to put miles on the clok to catch fish. The beaches i fish will hopefully fish tonight but you never know....and Beaches are a big place u have to move around to find them at times. I was on Blyth pier just after new year during that big southerly and read reports on HERE of no one catchin fish on the pier, only seen one caught etc,.. I went down and lads were pulling them in left, right and centre! If i catch fish tonight i prob won't post because i KNOW 4 a fact that MOST people don't! However, i will tell people if they ask me.

it's all getting a bit handbag's at dawn ladies! bit of pmt from rexy boy me thinks! Not everybody shares info, not everybody withholds info, thats just human nature. plus you must be mad if you think that everyone who fishes the north east posts articles on here anyway. The way i read the original post it was just a bit of a moan at the dwindling shore catches compared to yesteryear, which most people agree with. for instance my dad caught more double figure fish from the shore than anyone else iv'e heard of (see 21lb cod from cambois thread). he was a proper fisherman, as were a lot of blokes from that era, not like us wussies with our lightweight rods, super duper headlights & chemically sharpened super strong hooks, it was said he could catch a fish in a goldfish bowl! but one of the lads on here has already took around 90 to 100 cod this season from the shore, best to 7.5lb, returning some of the smaller in-size fish, but he spends his spare time sorting out gear & bait, not posting articles on here! dedication pays. The fish are still there, not as many granted, but fishing the right location with quality bait when the conditions are right will still usually kick up fish, it's just more of a challenge, but you have to decide if you just want to go fishing, or do you want to catch fish? cant complain that youve blanked when you only went fishing to escape from the wife for a couple of hours, even though the sea was flat! maybe if certain member's spent more time ensuring they had the right bait and less time on here they would catch more..............& rexy boy, take a chill pill mate!

Only being 30 years old I am WAAAY too young to remember the so called glory days...and as this is really my first "Cod season" I'm not overly qualified to make too much comment, but the way I see it is this:
bags of 50/60/70 Codling a night would be mint, but the bottom line it isn't like that so you have to savour the ones you do catch...yes we know WHY it's the way it is but like others have said previously, you tailor your tactics when the going gets tough to try and outsmart the crafty feckers...like 99% of all Anglers I do it to get out of the house and escape for a few hours so catching big fish to me isn't always neccessary...
I think sometimes there's a penis size issue thing that goes on with some of the so called "Cod Anglers"...who mock and decry the lads that are happy scratching for small stuff, one of my key tactics now is the small hook scratching rig - if nowt else it saves me from blanking...I like Cod as a fish to catch, but there are other species...to be honest I'm going to try and target as many different species this year as I can
Someone mentioned dogfish - often seen as a pest in certain areas, the way the climate is going and the fact that underwater ecosystems are changing our coast is going to see a lot more of them over the years...personally I think they're quite a cool fish, but then I've only ever caught one on light tackle
As for posting reports - I always post one, even if it's crap...otherwise it'd give the lurkers nothing to read and contributors nothing to do

dunno bout catching dogs, my old haunts are north wales, caught many many of them, good bite then its a wet sack, yes its catching and often saves you blanking but after dragging in that 10th doggie of the session you get a wee bit miffed, ok a spur or a smoothie in shallow water is a totally different thing, your going to wonder if the bass is really such a fighter but i cant see those being over here in many numbers in my lifetime-mores the shame, but like any fish, tackle up to suit and its suprising how a lot actually do put up a scrap, and if that lunker comes along then if its decent tackle you will still get it in, my last codling came in on a light rod, abu 5500 using 20lb braid and 4 oz lead, i would have used 3 oz except i had left them at home, i have a nice 10 foot abu 263 that casts a max of 3oz, too light say some but i have seen pics of a 100lb lemon shark taken on one, even whitting give a good account of themselves on it, bass are just out and out torpedo`s on it

I have a small Penis but tend to catch large fish does this make me an exception to the rule.

mick, if it's a higher post count you want, just do what a load of other people do, ie every new member say "welcome to nesa", when a report is posted reply "craking report mate" (even when every 1 involved blanked & somebody was seriously injured by a casting disaster) and dont forget the obligatory "lol" comment to each and every post, you will be a senior member in no time and your opinions really will count.........
