seems a total ban on smoking in newcastle has been pushed through to take palce by 2010 or there abouts ,whats your view on this

as a smoker,i agree on some of the points for the ban ie where food is served in a pub or restaraunt but in a bar or club say im not sure if its a good idea, i seldom smoke in the house if the kids are around,id prefer the introduction of smoking/non smoking areas better ,as its not against the law your not doing anything wrong ,unless you want to look at it on moral grounds ;)

this debate is really starting to get on my tits. we smokers are a social menace apparently so there needs to be a ban on smoking. Its a strain on the NHS apparently, but the government don\'t have the balls to ban sales of tobacco cos they want the money as well.

costs to the NHS...for every £100 it costs to treat smoking relateed illnesses, around £300 will have been collected from smokers in revenue!

so if we want rid of social menaces, why not ban alcohol while we are at it. There\'s no worse menace late at night if your out and about, bet nobody ever felt intimidated by someone smoking a tab at the bus stop late at night, but would you fancy standing next to a crowd of pissed 15 and 16 year olds who know you can\'t lay a finger on em

and what does alcohol cost the nhs?? keeping quiet about that one they are, ever been to the RVI on a friday night??

more control freakery from comrade Tony. soon it will be an offence not to go to church on sunday and thank baby jesus for sending George and Tony (gods own hairdressers) to save us

fuck em

I\'m a non smoker and most of my family are as well, however I do not find it anti-social or offensive if other people wish to smoke, people seem to forget that during the 50\'s and 60\'s it was fashionable to smoke and people were brainwashed through advertisment into believing smoking was \"ok\",the government made billions and still do in taxes.
I only get annoyed when we are eating out and people are smoking but most places have non smoking area\'s and have done for years now.

I\'m a smoker (didn\'t smoke \'til I was married....read into that what you will...lol).

OK, we ALL know it can kill, but so can many other things. Yes it can be viewed as being anti-social, but so can many other things. It\'s seen as a drain on the NHS, but so are many other things......etc etc..

1st off....it can kill.......LIFE is fatal ! I seen somewhere on the \'net recently, may have been somebody\'s signature on here, I can\'t remember, but it said, \"eat healthily, exercise regularly, die anyway\"
How VERY true.

2ndly.....it\'s anti-social.....smoking isn\'t anti-social...it\'s the individual smoker who can act in an anti-social manner. Personally, I\'ve never lit up a cigatrette in a restaurant or cafe.....infact we always look for and go to the \"non-smoking\" area (If there is one). Now that\'s another laughable notion....you\'re sitting in the non-smoking area, but the table accross the 5\' aisle is in the \"smoking\" area....does the smoke KNOW where to stop ??
The \"anti-social\" aspect boils down to respect for the other persons point of view...both smokers and non-smokers.

3rdly........It\'s a drain on the NHS.........The amount of duty smokers pay virtually keeps the NHS going. It\'s the non-smokers who should be grateful to us smokers for funding the NHS and keeping it available for ALL of us, if & when we need it.

ive seen more people die after giving up the weed than while smoking ,i personaly believe that if you smoke and give up the body hoys a wobbler ,antisocial ?,more people smoke in social situations than owt else ,if you smoke alone then thats antisocial ;)
i never used to drink till i got married or was that the reason i got married i dont recall probly peed up to the eyeballs at the time
whos to say whats safe and not these days ,apples are good for you but there high in acid ,salt ,bleached bread nuts glutton the list goes on ,what did we all do in the olden days befor these health nuts started telling us what to and what not to eat
catch rickets and ringworm ?but we had a fag and a bag oh nuts with our pint ;)

I packed in 2 years ago so I\'ve got nowt against smokers. My problem is with the control freaks who used to tell me smoke here not there,if you smoke you\'ll die quicker cos we wont treat you on the NHS etc.I have my own opinions on things but I don\'t push for a total ban on anybody who disagrees me or any ar*ehole who lives down south and has nowt better to do than say\"OK chaps, this week we\'ll try to ban shiteing at work because the smell might interfere with my stopping people smoking and foxhunting\"

we\'ve all been dying since the day we were born, but hey george and tony know best, live a healthy life, stop smoking and be a part of the 4th crusade by joining the army and apparently they guarantee that you won\'t die from a smoking related illness

\" live a healthy life......\"
Why ? are non-smokers immortal ?

If you enjoy a cigatrette, ENJOY it.

A friend of mine (I\'d known him for 30 years) recently died of cancer.

He was a non-smoker, enjoyed life to the full and was (to all intents and purposes) the embodiment of healthy living .........non-smoking (hated smokng), had regular work outs at the gym, played football on a regular basis..........as I said previously \" eat healthily, exercise regularly,........die anyway.
God rest Bill.....I miss you, m8.

Got to agree with most of the points made on here. I will say one thing though I am the same as Tony I am a smoker but I have smoked since I was about 11 only smoke about 10 a day. I hate people lighting up in a restaurant I will always go into the non smoking part. If I want a tab I can have one after my meal away from other diners.

Jim.

ell i heard you booked a hol in aus cos you thought someone said great barrier reefer ;)
in all honesty i wish i could give it up im not a heavy smoker like jim im less than 20 a day but there are certain times when the days just not complete without a smoke ,if i only smoked after sex id be down to one a month :P and if i smoked after every meal (snacks included) id be a 40 a day man ;)

Im a smoker as well and I never smoke in anyones home who does not smoke unless they say that its ok to light up.I also work with lads who dont smoke and I always go outside for a tab if I am working with non-smokers at the time.I have set myself these rules and they seem to be working up to now.I enjoy a smoke and as that is my choice, I object to being told that smoking is bad for me as I already know it is and I also object to being bombarded with adverts on the telly from the anti-smoking brigade. I was listening to a radio phone-in the other day and there was a Doctor on the phone who smoked himself and he put across some really good points and really had a go at the do-gooders trying to rule the way we live. There was also a debate on the same programme about banning four wheel drive vehicles from inner cities and towns where \"they were not needed\". I dont need anyone to tell me how to live my life and what vehicle to drive and it seems to me that big brother is indeed here to stay. I once asked my Doctor if I would live longer by giving up smoking, drinking and women and he said \"No, but it will fxxxxxg feel like it !\". What the hell happened to personal choice and personal freedom in this country ?

never thought about it, but us smokers are continually trying to accommodate and not offend non-smokers. Yet what do they do for us??

If any one is in a restauarant with an ugly wife I don\'t ask them to send her outside whilst I\'m eating, what next vegetarians asking meat eaters to site elsewhere so they can\'t smell my steak

totaly agree mark the non smokers should sit elsewhere as i find the lack of smoke and high morals puts me off my meal :P

in an age where there are a lot more serious things which could be put to rights i find this debate stupid ,if they get there ban and revenue from cigs goes down will smokers get the blame for higher taxes on something else

Whilst on the subject, has anyone else noticed the increased number of anti-smoking ads on the telly ? it seems that every other ad is an anti-smoking one. Is this just co-incidence or is there a hidden agenda !

might be reverse psychology lol
id like to know where there getting the funds from if these are goverment funded ?
us smokers ??

i agree that we will all die at some point..
but sooner or later is mostly up to the individual.
how you choose to live your life is the main bearing factor.

non smokers choose not to smoke......and not to passive smoke

heres a question for smokers

How would you explain to your children while on your death bed that you are dying because of something you had control over?

smoking doesnt just cause cancer.....

smokers dont like the anti smoking ads because everything in them is fact and happens in real life...

the truth is if you smoke......maybe not now...but in later life you are setting yourself up for a life full of smoking related diseases

the same goes for a number of things

the combination of poor health in general, obesity, heavy drinking and smoking means a ticking timebomb of heart disease, heart failure, respiratory disease and cancer....

is this really how you want to live your life?

its like sleeping with someone who has aids without any protection sooner or later you will get aids....

smoking kills .....its not IFs or BUTs its FACT

mands

ok im ready for the onslaught of abuse now!!!!! hahahahahaha

Hi Mands. No onslaught from me. I am a smoker and you have raised some good points. its all about freedom of choice to do what I want to do when I want to do it.Lets just look at a few other issues:
1). Binge Drinking - I live in the middle of Whitley Bay and the weekends are something you have to witness to comprehend. I have hosed vomit from my yard walls and garage doors, I have broken up fights outside my home, I have lost count of the number of times that I have cleared up broken bottles, beer cans, wine bottles, pizza boxes etc, etc, from my front garden. I have NEVER seen television adverts telling me how bad drinking is for my health or other peoples health.
2). Road traffic - go into any town centre and you are inhaling carbon monoxide from buses, cars, vans and wagons. Surely this is bad for us as well ? but I have never seen adverts telling us not to drive or go into any area where there is traffic.
3). Industry - If you leave near any sort of industrial estate, the chances are you you will be inhaling some sort of obnoxious chemical.I have never seen any adverts telling us not to inhale as we pass these places.
4). Food - God only knows what risk we are taking in simply having a meal these days. Food is so full of additives and preservatives and all manner of chemicals that must do us no end of harm but I have never seen any adverts telling us not to eat !
This government and previous governments were quite happy for me to go down a coal mine for 23 years without telling me the risks regarding inhaling coal dust, stone dust etc, etc,. I am aware that there were other careers I could have chosen but thats where the money was at the time. So can you see my vewpoint Mands ?. I smoke because I enjoy it and I go fishing because I enjoy it, there both my choice and we smokers have the same rights of choice as non smokers.I have said in a previous post that I will not smoke in anyones home/space who do not smoke and I think these are good concessions on my part. Living life itself is fraught with dangers and I am sick and tired od seeing anti-smoking adverts everytime I turn on the telly or listen to the radio. Nothing personal Mands and I welcome you to the board. You have come to the right place for good debates.

Cheers
