SLOSH/SHV 20s 30s

Modifications in progress.

I'm busy repairing a SHV30 for a mate and it's the same old problem that spoils a good heavy ground reel.
The weakness is the main drive gear shaft,it bends the shaft and the inner brass bush wears out so the handle wobbles about and this affects the gear meshing to the spool pinion gear and in time if not corrected will also damage the outer bearing and housing.
This problem is because Diawa have machined a reduction in the diameter of the main shaft to accommodate the retaining plate that holds the shaft into the housing of the reel.
Pics

The reduction is less that 3mm.see vernier measurement in pic.(weakness).
I have taken the old damage shaft and machined the bent worn end away then drilled and tapped it m6 then turned the stainless steel down to 5mm to fit a stainless steel bearing instead of a brass bush.
Have also increased the reduction diameter from less that 3mm up to over 4mm to take away the weakness at that point, but also used stainless steel in place of the brass material that was used to manufacture the shaft.and yes the SHV shafts are made from brass coated in silver...it's not s/s.
picsslost shaft mods 002.jpg

The mods will include stronger shaft, stainless steel end shaft, and will include 10x5x3 stainless steel bearing to replace the brass bush that wears out.
No need to buy a new shaft or brass bush the only cost is the bearing.
I'm waiting for reamer to machine and dress old brass bush to accept new stainless bearing.
Reamer is due next week then job is complete.
will let you see completed job next week.

and just as a side issue Diawa have no spare shafts, bushes until early Feb because they need to import parts from China.

Very interesting project there Harry - I looked at getting a bearing to fit but when I took the bush for measuring to my local bearings suppliers they told me they couldn't supply me with one, as the bush was actually 10.5mm. Have you managed to source a bearing to fit?

It's something I'd be interested in having done to the couple of SHA's I've got left, as they're otherwise very nice reels. Seems like a design flaw to me putting such a weak point in the shaft (must admit I thought they were SS - maybe I'm thinking of the Saltist shafts, which are much thicker (and a good deal more expensive!) It would certainly restore my faith in them if it works:thumbup:

Gary :)

PS - I can see it being a very popular modification! And I've just noticed your bit about reaming out the bearing - that would solve the problem I had trying to get a bearing to fit - I had considered reaming out the reel but I don't have the tools for the job.

That is correct Gary, the brass bushing is as you say a ******* size:o and there is no direct replacement bearing that's why I intend to retain the old brass bush and machine/ream it to take a std s/s bearing.

Yes a little tricky and job to be done not after a heavy nite.haha.:D
It beats me why the they reduced the shaft so much just to fit a plate that holds the shaft in position...very little strain on the outwards pull but a lot of strain on the crank position when hauling under load.

When jobs done I can send you all info and drawings on this mod if you want.
cheers H

Thanks Harry - yes, I can imagine reaming that bush is going to be a tricky job. If you were to fit a 10mm bearing, that would mean getting it down to 1/4mm around - although if a 9mm were possible it might be a bit easier? I'm just not sure what would be available to fit the modded shaft. Good luck! Oh, and those O-rings have a nasty habit of perishing & breaking when stripping the reel - I've had no luck sourcing those either! The last time one went on me I had to shave a slightly thicker one down with a scalpel; not pretty but it's held up ok so far - I don't know what'll happen next time I have to strip the reel though....

Gary :)
