Modifications in progress.
I'm busy repairing a SHV30 for a mate and it's the same old problem that spoils a good heavy ground reel.
The weakness is the main drive gear shaft,it bends the shaft and the inner brass bush wears out so the handle wobbles about and this affects the gear meshing to the spool pinion gear and in time if not corrected will also damage the outer bearing and housing.
This problem is because Diawa have machined a reduction in the diameter of the main shaft to accommodate the retaining plate that holds the shaft into the housing of the reel.
Pics
The reduction is less that 3mm.see vernier measurement in pic.(weakness).
I have taken the old damage shaft and machined the bent worn end away then drilled and tapped it m6 then turned the stainless steel down to 5mm to fit a stainless steel bearing instead of a brass bush.
Have also increased the reduction diameter from less that 3mm up to over 4mm to take away the weakness at that point, but also used stainless steel in place of the brass material that was used to manufacture the shaft.and yes the SHV shafts are made from brass coated in silver...it's not s/s.
pics
The mods will include stronger shaft, stainless steel end shaft, and will include 10x5x3 stainless steel bearing to replace the brass bush that wears out.
No need to buy a new shaft or brass bush the only cost is the bearing.
I'm waiting for reamer to machine and dress old brass bush to accept new stainless bearing.
Reamer is due next week then job is complete.
will let you see completed job next week.
and just as a side issue Diawa have no spare shafts, bushes until early Feb because they need to import parts from China.
