So this is what retirement is all about ? ...... midweek fishing
Not that I'm retired yet but a couple of days holiday certainly let me feel what it's gonna be like
A little bit of arm twisting and Keith too had a days holiday today acting as crew for Slinky. (not sure who was doing the arm twisting me or keith
)
After watching weather come and go for the past few days it was a bit nail biting waking up at 3.30am today and taking a peek out, wondering if it was a scortcher or a no go due to mist and fog. It ended being a little in between as we left the Tyne at about 5.30am with both piers in view but only just.
Catch reports lately have been pretty good in general with only the odd one not working out as planned so today we set out with high hopes with a tide just beginning to flood and the sea almost flat with visibility increasing as we sailed further east.
Our first port of call were a couple of wrecks which we had heard were "on fire" .. hmmm ? well not quite today (or yet) I think.
An hour or so into the flood and the going was slow but keith broke the duck with a cod on the pirk then shortly after with a coley ... again on the pirk ???
We had several moves and the tide progressed to an hour or so before top and things were beginning to look .... well ...ordinary.... as far as catches went, I had struck a couple and keith a couple more but nothing of real size. Then, with a run to a wreck that had not produced in the past few seasons, it all went crazy .... whoooo hoooo cod cod cod (and ling ling ling) hard to say what was best, shads or pirk or baited muppets, everything just caught .... we began to fill the box(es) with good sized cod the best around 8lb but many in the 6lb & 7lb range.
There comes a time when the arms ache and the back aches simply with the catch rate .... this was that time
they're certainly back .....
Still not late in the trip but we decided to leave that particular wreck for another day and return to our earlier position over a couple of favourite bits of wreckage ... this time ... well, you can guess, it was sheer magic with shad and pirk battling it out for best catch ... (I'm not sure who won ?) .. one things for sure, one little shad of mine was responsible for at least 5 fish for 25lb or so and is safely tucked away for the next trip.
Another fantastic day with fish in abundance, although to be fair we spent the first few hours looking for them ........
Weather held good and eventually cleared the majority of the mist that had been hanging around.
A few pics of the day, there is a bit video but it'll be put together later as a compilation of a few trips as we spent most of the day fishing not filming
....
Keiths first cod of the day ...
A coley? on a pirk? nooooo .... or .. eerrrrrmmmmmm yesssssss.....
and a small whiting for myself
The first Slinky Mackerel of the season ....
Then the real fish begin to show ....
And another ....
And Yet another ...
Finally .......... the results ...
Spot on day today .... shad-tastic and pirk-fect ......
cheers to crew for the day Keith ......
thanks for viewing ..
