Hi all.
With hope of us all catching our first ever Smoothhounds, myself, Pop39 and Jarradisco set off to Skegness. I was picked up at 6am and away we went. We got to our first mark in Skegness around 10am. The wind was brisk at times but was at our backs, and we had some shelter at this first mark.
With fresh crab baits cast well out, we began the wait and anticipation. Pop39's first cast was fruitful, landing his first ever Smoothhound and the first of the day, weighing 5lb 3ozs.
Another hour or so passed with no action whatsoever, and as we packed up to move to a different location not too far away, Pop39 landed his second Smoothhound of the day, this one slightly smaller, around 3lb+.
After moving to a new mark not far away, we set up once again, and again waited and waited for the fish to show.
I decided to move a little further away, following a sandbar the was becoming exposed by the ebbing tide. As I moved my seatbox and gear to dryer sand closer to the water some 20/30 yards away, my rod flew over, taking the tripod with it. After some faffing with line as my reel nested as it got knocked out of gear when it hit the sand, I caught up with the culprit of my rod hitting the sand and the fight began. The fish did not seem all that big coming in, but once the dorsal fin broke the water, and Pop39's excitement upon seeing it, I knew it had to be special, and it was. My first ever Smoothhound, as well as the biggest fish I have ever caught in my life, tipping the scales at 12lb 3ozs. I was absolutely over the moon, my first ever smoothie and it was a double!
After quickly photographing and weighing the stunning looking fish, it was quickly returned to the water, and swam away strong, to grow bigger and hopefully make another anglers day someday!
At the same time I landed my first fish, Jarradisco landed his first ever Smoothhound and his first of the day, weighing 4lb 11ozs.
No more than 10 minutes later after getting a bait back in the water, my ratchet on my reel screamed away, and resulted in my second Smoothhound of the day, this one smaller than my first, but still a modest 6lb 3ozs on the scales.
Unfortunately we had to leave not long after, although both Pop39 and Jarradisco did have other fish throughout the day, including Plaice and Dabs, and all fish were returned to fight another day.
All in all it was an absolutely excellent day, a new species for me, and a new PB for me, properly christened my new rod. Happy as a duck in water, hopefully do it all again soon! :red:
