however if you can get em still alive in there shells...
well you shell them there's a 'frill' that runs around the edge of the shell, basically all the 'eyes'/nervous system of the wee beasties
keep this bit, it freezes well and is tough as old boots so great for baiting up and is laden with fishy/shell fishy pheromones
when we've dived for scallops in scotland i've kept these bits for bait and the fish go absolutely nuts for it. we've fished it side by side with the freshest crab, monstrous black lug and white rag and if there's some of this bit in the mix or on its own they didn't touch the other baits
fishing the beaches for plaice/flatties was especially good with it
All the tackle shops in the north east will have the soon, i no lewis tackle in whitley bay is selling them 1.50 a bag , they are good bait for all types of fish black bream ,bass , cod and many more.
Used to go up to Caradale in Kintyre many years ago as a kid for holidays. The fishing boats coming in would give the kids bucket fulls of scallop to fish with and it was literally a codling a chuck. Best bait I've ever used. Don't think those times will return but you never know.
I deleted my thread because it should have read Scallops.
This thread was originally posted in 2007 when i used to get scallops from Paul Scott after he returned from diving trips to Oban he gave me generous amounts of scallops to eat and because they were for free i didnt mind giving them a try for fishing with.
Couldnt afford to use scallops at todays prices, anyway crab/mussel/squid cocktails catch me plenty.
