HELP! anyone know how to. . . .

crack-off!

Well-known member
Fished Hadstone last night and when i came off i could\'nt seperate my rod!Went back to weigh in and eight of us all twisting and pulling still could\'nt budge it!
Today i have tried a couple of the suggestions i got (wd40 and boiling water)and it definately does not want to know.Anyone got any ideas how to free it?
Oh aye,bye the way the fishing was crap too!ended up with 3 small codlings but dropped another 3 good \'uns off!

take the butt cap off (if your rod has one ) you could have an air lock of some type, and i reckon you are doing this anyway - but just in case ,twist the two sections in differant directions. hope the cap does the trick. :P

Crack-off,
My son Ian, had a rod that, no matter what we tried, we coldn\'t get it apart. It stayed as a one piece rod lying up the stairs for about a year.

I asked on NESA if there was a way of getting the rod apart - THERE WAS..........

As Brian says, remove the butt cap (if it has one). You now need somebody to help; each of you take an end and gently swing the rod, skipping rope style - It\'ll free within a couple of seconds

Crack-off!,

I had similar problems with a brand new rod. I contacted the manufacturers who offered no advice other than to return it under warranty - stuff that I thought, what will I fish with!
I tried everything pulling, yanking shocking, twisting, warming, cooling and WD40 . The thing that finally freed it was to hold the but end between my feet hold the rod about two foot above the joint and with the other hand grab immediately below the joint. Holding both ends firmly make circular motions with the mid section of the rod as if you were stirring a pudding, alternate this stirring motion with a shaking motion (Really shake the **** out of it!). I also found that it helped to swear and shout profanities at the stupid ******* thing! - helped me anyway ;)
After spending several minutes of vigorous stirring, shaking and shouting It came apart with a gentle twist :D

Hope this helps

Am following this thread with baited nipples. (see tynemouth post - mates rod in same position, ie one very long position) century have some kit that will part the rod if at all posible, apparently. We tried making a small bonfire under Geordies, that didn\'t work either. Pat, I\'ve just tried your suggestion without the rod and have put me back out. Anyone suggest how i can put it back in?

Warning :exclam:
Do not try the above described procedure without a rod :exclam: - at least not in public :o

Ell,

Try stirring the other opposite way, and go easier on the shaking ;)

Ell,
Get 2 mates - 1 to hold the head end and the other to hold ya feet.
Then tell them to swing you (skipping rope style).

May not cure the back problem - but it\'ll be cheaper than a ride at Alton Toweres :P

just put me back back in by rolling on the floor and laughing my arse off.
Rods still stuck though (titter)

Only had this problem the once.

Take off the butt cap and fill the rod with warm, very soapy water. Leave standing for about 30 mins then try a gentle twisting movement holding either side of the spigot, towels help.

Have heard of WD40 being used but dont know if it works.

Its quite common apparently that with age and after frequent insertion, some kind of lubricant may indeed be required to prevent a reoccurrence

In this type of situation I would strongly recommend following any advice given by Harold. Harold knows these things, if it doesn\'t work then get back to Harold. Trust me! Hey Harold nice to see you looking in mate.

Harold,
I\'m disapointed, m8 - I thought you\'d know a site which deals in getting stuck rods apart. ;)

As Ell says, good to know you\'re still looking in, m8.

put the rod behind your knees, feet 1ft apart grip the rod 6ins either side of the sprigot push outwards with your legs, it works every time.

cover the joint with a wet rag and leave out over night tonight or frosty night, in morning pour boiling water over joint, the ice will shrink the spigot a few thou, and the boiling water will release the joint. i was told this trick yrs ago and worked once for me.. good luck ;)

Keep looking in from time to time, nice to be remembered. :D

Like I said it worked for me the once, but could have been just a one off.

Would be careful with boiling water though, think it would cause damage to carbon rods!

When we were trying to free Ians rod, it was suggested using boiling water. I thought it sounded a bit dodgy doing so (expecting to hear a \"crack\" as the water was poured over the joint). Decided to pour the boiling water over a tea towel instead, then put the towel around the joint - giving the rod a hot wrap. Didn\'t work, though.

We\'d really tried everything: heat, cold, WD40, grease, butter, brute force, pulling, twisting, shaking........the lot.

I think it was Andy B. who suggested the \"sure-fire\" way of freeing the rod by using the skipping rope technique. Within about 4 \"swings\" of the rod, I felt it loosen and on the next \"swing\" it was free - after a YEAR of being imovable. Couldn\'t believe how easily it came apart.

IMHO - and this is Just a theory, but I think it is probable that the majority of locked rods are due to grit embedded between the sides of the spigot joint, rather than any other cause - in this particular case I don\'t think lubrication will help very much.

I think TC\'s, Mazzaxix\'s and my method all work on the same or similar priciple i.e., flexing the joint sufficiently for any grit to either drop out, grind down, or get compressed into the blank.
