Float fishing session

I had a session with the float yesterday on Shields pier over high water 3-7pm, out the way of all the kids and nuggets and nugget kids, so I thought. I've never been successful with a float the last few times I've tried (blanked), but with some good advice off Mark (Fishing Mark), I had a new found confidence that this was going to be it, target species wrasse and blenny with maybe a pollock, coalie, dragonette and macky possibilities.

After 25-30 minutes or so I was losing hope, then I felt a shaking through the rod and reeled in, it was a crab and fell off on retrieve, 5 minutes later I watched the float go onto its side so lifted into it and this time it was a corkwing wrasse, yessssss 1 target species and a virgin float fishing man has lost his virginity.

Another 15 minutes passed again with nothing, altering depths and watching people march past me with bags of mackerel, asking caught owt mate or owt doing down here. Then without any sign I reeled in to change bait and there was a blenny hanging off the hook (he's got one I heard in background), both target species acquired within an hour, sweet I can just have some fun now I thought.

Another 5 minutes and then float goes shooting down and its a bigger Corkwing this time, I'm a dab hand at float fishing now thanks for the tips Mark.

ZOOM whoosh f*** me a lead goes over my head and some fella (20s) appears on the wall next to me (that voice from the background) asking if its snaggy here. I'm float fishing mate, are you bait fishing, nor man am using daylites his response, nuff said I think, needless to say he got snagged up, clue and not come to mind.

Thankfully he moved away after that, then I had some scranner asking questions and trying to get some busfare outa me lol. How long will it take me to walk Sunderland he said in his Shields accent, about 45 minutes I said, with 14 mackerel he said, oh well maybe an hour I said, it'll be quicker on the bus. He said I lost my busfare, £5 note it was too so I have to walk, so how long to Sunderland with a bag of macky, 45 minutes to an hour I said, not getting a meg off me I thought haha. :D

Anyway I had another 6 or 7 corkwings, then a mad 10 minutes where it was sea scorpions, I got this lovely red one.

I could see lots of fish hanging around my hook stripping the bait until around an hour after high when a lot of weed started to gather below me and then the water muddied up, this coincided with the coalies coming on. I thought its time to pack in now after a few coalies of little finger size, it was a good fun little session and gave me belief in using a float.

Well done mate. It's great when your trying something new and you get what ya after. I've been doing a bit float fishing lately and I'm really enjoying it.

Cheers mate, it is good fun when you get it right. As I say I've tried it a few times but not really had a clue what I was doing, it gets disheartening when you try and catch nowt. Just a tip from Mark on how the float acts was enough for me, a simple if it lies on its side your on the bottom and adjust it so it stands up helped me no end like, sounds silly but it worked for me.

I know what ya mean mate. I started getting that feeling up beadnell yesterday. Especially when the one decent knock I had some bell in a kayak stopped about 3 ft away from my float. Guess what. The fish didn't come back.

Those wrasse are toppas mind. I want to try for some big ones on the float one day.
