Fixed Spool Reels

Hi, i'm new to boat fishing so i was wondering if you can use fixed spool reels on the boat. I have various multipliers, 525mag2, slosh30, 7HT, but the Okuma Axeon AX 90 i have would pulled the plug out i think loaded with braid. So could i use this on a boat rod. What would be the pro's and con's, any feedback would be really appreciated.

Hi mate, if you look at mick dunns catch report on the 25/5/12 penarth south Wales there a chap on there caught a 31lb conker so cnt see any reason y u cudnt mate he was using 40lb braid aswell, well done on him

I've spoke to a couple of people on the subject and one thinks it would be ok, the other thinks i'd look a right prat fishing with a fixed spool on a boat.
So i'm non the wiser and think when i do go out, i'll take the Okuma fixed spool and my Slosh30, then i can try both and see which one feels more comfortable.

grab this mate . my mate uses a fixed spool shore fishing and has had some cracking fish .a pb cod of 11lb.10 and many other good size fish too .so a fixed spool is capable of pulling anything in if ya nah what ya deeing

Being wary of looking a d*ck using a fixed spool reel i've took the plunge and bought a Penn 321gt2 (left handed) reel. Does anyone have an opinion on these.

Oh that Mr R. . That's where any comparisons end. I saw it the other night for the 1st time. Wouldn't mind doing some of that extreme Fishing he's done.

this is a complete about turn for me(used to think,and regularly say:exclamnly numbskulls fish with f/spool on boat(drift fishing)

fish with what you are happy with:exclam: you will fish better if your happy with what you are using,if you get hooked into a lunker be prepared for a long battle:exclam: good luck

Try it and report back...sometimes it takes a maverick to take the plunge

Personally I don't think that a f/s suits wreck fishing on the drift

Hi pazza, I often use a fixed spool reel, just a cheapy I got from a car boot sale, loaded with 30lb braid. Ive had pollock over 13lb, and that did some spectacular crash dives with the clutch screaming, but with steady presure and a lot of fun got it to the boat.
Another time, I had 2 cod on which took the weight well into double figures, all achieved by lifting and reeling, letting the rod do the work, not the reel.
Use a light rod, the one I use on this set-up is a Sonik sk3 6-12lb, so every fish you hook up gives a good account of itself.
I would say go for it and don't let others put you off, it wasn't long ago when a snooker que with a 10 inch centre pin was the norm, and the newcomers using a multiplier were scoffed at.

Thanks for the replies lads, everythings been appreciated. I've since bought a new boat reel off fleabay. But i will take the Okuma aswell to see if it can cope.
I look forward to getting out on my first ever boat trip and hopefully i can give you's a nice catch report to read.
