This Comp was fished on the Golden clean sands of Embleton Beach in Northumberland on a glorious sunny day, with a slight off shore wind on an incoming tide, between 10am and 3pm.
Due to the location, knowing all the fish would be flats, we decided to make life easier for the scorer( me) and revert from the usual SAMF scoring chart and go to the easier total length/longest fish for the prizes !!
All the anglers, thirteen of us met at the Dunstanbourgh Golf Course around 9am and got an early start onto the beach. The sand was surveyed with all the features identified, then that's when the real Comp began, you'd think it was the qualifying run for the 100m, with all the anglers trying to get to their chosen swim.
It was when Mr Elliot (Codonly) said that he was going to a piece of sand about 500 m away from everyone else, lumping an airiated tank, dynamite, speargun, Trawl net, and box of secret bait did I begin to suspect something amiss.
"I'm off over here" he shouted, as he pulled down his blaggers mask, but benefit of the doubt I gave him, as that's the kind of person I am.
The Comp started with most anglers fishing in shorts and bare feet, such was the day,and within minutes of chucking out, Ian Ainsley pulled out a double shot, of clean small Dabs, knowing Mr Elliot was checking them out with his binoculars, a second trace was quickly cast without the bait being identified.
All the Anglers began to register from then but only small Dabs, flounder,Brill,Turbot and Plaice.
As the tide pushed up the beach the better bites arrived along with a few of the sought after species ( Brill, Turbot and Plaice )
Nothing of great size was recorded throughout the day, but the sport and Crac was canny.
Plenty of nice ladies attended the beach, but I wish the dog walkers would try to control their dogs when approaching the lads equipment.
Two incidents of dogs swallowing baited traces resulting in time lost carrying out surgery to the poor animals on the sands, both fine and recovering.
As the end of the Comp approached Mr Elliot returned from his Adventure across the Sands to say " I ain't had a bite in the last ten minutes" Shame ehh. At least he was still wearing his Robbers Mask and Mexican Bandits Sombreo.
Well done Stevie, Shame a gota peek at your secret bait, and I will be ready next time.!!!
