Your favourite charter boat?

Well with the year drawing to a close, I thought it might be interesting to hear what is people's favourite charter boat/Skipper that you fished with this year and why?

As it is only a subjective opinion please don't put up negative posts, as that wouldn't be fair.

Too start it off, here are our favourites.

We have fished Amble, Bridlington, Eyemouth, Scarborough, Tyne and Whitby this year, often going out on more than one boat at some of the ports.

As Lynn and I were pretty much complete novices when we started, it was important that the Skippers were patient and helpful!!

Whitby at Xmas was our first trip, going out with Paul on Trot On. As I said, being novices, we were severely under tackled with 8oz weights and 20lb line. Couldn't even hit the bottom!
Paul came to the rescue (thank you!) with 50lb leader and 1lb weights and we had an amazing day with both of us boating double figure Pollack and also Cod to 10lbs. Of course Lynn had the biggest fish of the day, a Pollack of 13.5lbs!! What a first trip!!

We had a lovely trip out of Amble at Easter with Jeff and Duncan on Warlord. Fantastic blokes and very helpful with local advice on baits etc. We also must mention the lovely lady at Amble tackle shop. Early in the season, but we still managed a few decent Cod. Had a great laugh onboard and Lynn totally out fished me .........again!!

Next at Easter was with Tony on Mistress out of the Tyne. Beautiful fast boat and Tony wasn't afraid to go well offshore and use the boat's power. Plenty of good chat and advice from Tony,(what a lovely guy), a good bag of Cod...........plus I managed to get two more fish than Lynn for once, so that was great !

Later in the year it was back to Whitby and two trips with Jim and Dave on Charisma. Brilliant guys, couldn't do enough for you, great advice, gave us tackle to try and Dave filleted the fish on the way back to port! Not the fastest boat, but certainly the cheapest. On the first trip we had so many cod that we started returning fish in the afternoon. The second trip saw me catch my first Ling. Lynn won the first trip, the second an honourable draw.

So she has bragging rights for the year.........unfortunately!

Will definitely be fishing all those boats again next year and have also booked, Shy Torque out of Whitby and North Star out of Hartlepool.

So which was our absolute favourite?

Well with the shouts of cop-out ringing in our ears, I'm going to say, we can't choose between them, indeed even Lynn and I didn't agree on the best, which had more do do with what we caught than anything else, I suspect!

As I said it's all subjective.

What we can do is highly recommend all of them to you. Try them next year if you can, you won't be disappointed.

Best wishes for the festive season and we would be interested in hearing your charter boat favourites.

Mark and Lynn

great positive post, i love to read these...hope to see more in the future! glad you both had a great start to your chartering ventures, heres to many more

think ill sit this one out:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

there are some belting boats about also some excellent skippers.
the days of someone with little knowledge buying a boat and taking people out are pretty well long gone.

theres plenty of choice now too, as there are faster boats which can cover more marks in a day increasing the chance of a lunker or ten:D

then theres the 8knot plodders where people can have a leisurely day relax and hopefully still get a good bag of fish, good boats to improve your skills too :exclam:

great post mark

That's my point Duncan. Which is the best? Who knows? What's the basis of saying whose best?

For me the best charter boat is often decided by what a person catches and lets face it we mainly go on a boat to catch fish not just for the day out but...........

I would say the best charter boat should not be judged on the catch more on how hard the skipper trys on the hard days, i am sure we have all had experiances of both sides of the coin..

i.e

1/ few fish, skipper trys couple difts in many locations and distances trying to find the anglers some fish.

2/ few fish the skipper just accepts it and does not move often or far to try for better.

As a boat owner myself i know that some days even your best marks can not produce, for the 4 lads that fish with me they will tell you i only have 1 banker wreck left south of the Tyne and 1 left north of the time (by banker i mean always caught a fish each from the wreck every visit for last 4 years) before this year i had 2 south 3 north..so that shows even wrecks that produced fish last 3 years everytiem can sometimes not hold fish.

Its a tough game for the skippers our days with fuel prices, lack of spare money for people, windy summers and insurance going up.

I cant speak for other area's but i am sure it is the same up and down the noth east coast but i know the Tyne charters all try hard every trip to find the fish for the anglers, often burning ££'s of fuel to get a few more fish for people.

Its a tough old game this fishing lark but we keep going back for more :)

favourite charters

favourite charters

I think Richy summed up the reasons for being a great charter skipper so here is my list

Tyne - Tony (Mistress)
Alan (JFK)
Whitby - Paul ( Sea Otter II)

its not just about the number of fish but the whole package.

:)with some of richies results theres a few folks wishing it was a charter boat, not forgetting norman and slinky kate:exclam:

probably the two most consistant "catchers" on here, lick lick slurp slurp, this bootpolish tastes terrible:D:D:D:D:D

haha dunk :):D:D:) but I've been well taught (by im imself), there's no doubts who leads the way on the tyne private boats and the knowledge and experiecnce of our area ............ (No boot polish needed here as I've said it many a time) .... from stage right .......... bert ... take a bow... me auld mate.
