Having a week in a cottage at Whitby first week in August. Just fancy a few quiet sessions on pier and/or decent shore marks. Would love to catch a bass but just a few bites is all I am really after on holiday.

Could anyone suggest any decent marks/tactics?

I will be staying at a cottage in town so can get down to the marks at any stage of the tide.

Any assistance gratefully appreciated.

Sandsend beach just north of Whitby may produce if there's a bit surf running. If not there are usually some flounder and turbot with the odd plaice caught there I believe.

You'll get some advice off the Whitby Anglers site. Good luck.

Thanks lads, will give that a go. What would be the best casting distance and bait for this time of year ?

Also will the pier be any good ?

Quick report lads. Nowt to speak of really. Very few Mackeral on pier just a few small coalies bait fishing. Locals blaming coloured water due to recent rain but I also noticed a dredger operating every day in the harbour. Climbed up to the abbey and from there could see a distinct line of coloured water going way out to sea.

Tried sandsend and the sea wall at whitby for a bass but just a few flounder and dabs. Plenty of bites 'though and missed one massive pull on rag which I would like to think was a bass.

Ta for the help.
