Whitby Angling Festival 2008

The 2008 Angling festival at Whitby proved to be a massive success with anglers from all over the UK and as far afield as Canada competing for the £5000 first prize for heaviest single fish. Although the weather was never brilliant, in terms of conditions for good sea fishing that is, there was some fantastic catches of a diversity of species including : Cod, Ling, Haddock, Pollock, Coalfish, Pouting, Gurnard, Mackerel, Catfish, Norwegian Haddock, Whiting and even a Porbeagle Shark which was returned alive and well under festival rules. Many of these catches can be viewed in the WCSA gallery. Speaking on behalf of the Whitby Charter Skippers Association, The Sea Urchin skipper Mick Leonard says :

“Congratulations to John Wilcox the overall grand festival winner fishing from rich wards boat shy-torque the 20Lb cod won John a total of £6600.00 plus a penn reel, this must be a uk record in winnings, and all in one boat fishing festival, and it really puts whitby right up there as the biggest and best boat fishing festival the uk has to offer, and discussions for the prize money for next year is already underway,
all the skippers from all the whitby charter boats have asked me to say a real big thank you to all you anglers who braved all weathers to compete and support not only whitby charter boats but whitby town and its businesses, also a real big thank you to all our sponsors all have helped to put whitby back on top of the sea fishing map, and lets not forget the weigh masters who give there time voluntary and do a sterling job,

The events presentation night will be held at the spa in whitby this Saturday 26th July doors open 7.30 tickets available on the door @ £10 each all proceeds to go to the whitby lifeboat fund, after the presentation there will be a live band with a auction between sets, again all in aid of the whitby lifeboats, followed by a diso and also a late bar for those not at sea the following day, all are welcome please come and support our lifeboats,
thanks again and my apologies if I have missed anyone”

In the main competition this years lucky winner was well known angler John Wilcock whose cod of just over 20 pounds took the first place prize pot of £5,000. John also won a Penn rod and reel as a daily winner and £1000 for being the captor of the heaviest single cod in the festival. John who fished aboard Rich Ward’s boat Shytorque 3 caught his huge cod on day 3 of the festival and then proceeded to cling onto his lead until the bitter end despite other anglers coming close with cod to almost 18 pounds and ling tipping the scales at 19 pounds. Other notable achievments in the festival include the capture of a near 17 pound ling by young Whitby angler Lewis Wright who took first place in the junior competition. Lewis was closely followed by another Whitby junior Barney Sixsmith who also managed a double figure ling and cod of 9 pounds giving him second and third place in the junior competition.
