which new reel

so far ive just been buying cheap gear for fishing (£10 beachcaster, £10 bass rod, £20 reels), but i've been getting out a fair bit so im thinking about spending a bit more and getting some decent gear (not spending too much though!).

even though my bass rod was just a tenner its not too bad, catching plenty of fish with it (mackerel, flounders, coleys, pollock), but might invest in a better, lighter rod, I like the shakespeare agility 2-4oz, might get one at some point, but at the minute a decent reel is probably more important.

so far on my bass rod i've used a £14 shakespeare 3500 (too small and thicker line spools off the top easily when casting), a £12 lineaeffe 5000 (handle snapped off 2nd time I used it) and now a £18 shakespeare omni 5000 (making lots of wierd noises, dont think it will last long, could also do with something a bit bigger, holding more line).

so...any recomendations for an 'all-rounder' reel (for use on a 1-3 or 2-4oz rod, for float fishing, spinning, pier fishing, and light beach fishing).

I'm thinking 5500 or 6000 size and I like the look of the Penn Pursuit 6000, the Okuma Distance 6000 or the Shakespeare Agility 5000 or 6000??

has anyone used any of these or any other similar reels?

Listen mate you dont want to buy to cheap or ull spend a fortune by good second hand or buy a good make or youll buy twice. I dont use fix spoolls sea fishing I use mulltis. But I no that diaiwa make good reels so that wat id suggest to u in the size that your after. Dont get me wrong money is tight but u dont want to be buy things twice and wasting ya coin mate. :)

thats what ive already done, spent about £45 already on the 3 small reels ive had, also spent £20 twice on reels for my beachcaster. I know the cheap stuff is crap and isnt economical in the long run, but i bought cheap at first because I didnt know how much fishing I'd do, or if i'd even bother.

now i am fairly into it so willing to spend a bit more. the 3 reels i mentioned im looking at are around £60, is that still too cheap for a medium sized fixed spool?

Should be able to get something for around that price mate wey aye. I always belive in buying well none brand every now and again u do get decent cheap stuff but my rule of thumb is you only get wat you pay for. Try looking on the for sale bit on here u might get somthing good second hand. Id rather do that me then at least u no its good swag and is a good brand. Ull defo get somthing mate better than wat you have for 60 notes

alreet m8. personaly in your position i would go for the abu 6500c power handle multiplyer reel with the level wind on. £80 new. Ive owned and used over a dozen reels over my 20 years of fishing and ive found this 1 possibly my favourite. very user friendly wether 25/30lb line for rock fishing or lighter lines 15/20lb for spinning or beach/river fishing. never let me down yet and my other reels that cost neary 3x price have. If you look after this reel it will last u a lifetime. just my honest opinion m8.

Wat about this mate rod and reel http://www.nesa.co.uk/forums/sale/219348-spiunning-set-up.html looks ok mate if still for sale. Get sum canny gear on here on the for sale just post an ad of wat ya want and if some ones selling they'll get in touch m8

Cheers mate, but a bit small, looking for about a 6000, and around 3oz rod. Might stick an ad on.

Looks like a nice reel, but now you've made the choice harder, I haven't even thought about multipliers (and now I am!).

Has anyone used the penn pursuit 6000?, found one on sale reduced from £70 to £45

Penn is a good make mate ive never used one but im sure itll better than wat u have been using. And no worries mate just trying to help someone out if I can

Penn have really phoned it in on there fixed spools, go daiwa and you wont go
wrong.
Infact penn aint worth crap, look at the blingy mag2.

Shimano all the way for me, look on eBay for your chosen sizes and you'll get a very good reel for, in some cases, very sensible money. Just my thoughts like.

okuma distance 60, braid and a tapared leader will add yards to your casting
had mine 2 years and take a hammering summer and winter
have mono on the spare spool for float fishing/down the wall on the pier
never had any issues

cheers, I have been looking at the okuma distance, thats the sort of thing im after for a bit of distance on the beach and to use for float fishing of the piers. also looking at the penn fierce 6000 now as well, looks like same sort of spec. tempted by both

what size/weight rods do you use the okuma with?

Use it with my 11'6" bass rod and my 12'9" beachcaster

30lb braid on one spool 15lb mono on the other

Ok, so I got one...

I know there are some bad reports of penn reels, but after hours of research, and finding lots of good reviews of the fierce, I went with the Penn Fierce 6000.

Full price is £80, it's got a full metal body and shielded bearings, so should be fairly solid. Havent used it yet but it feels really smooth out of the box.

I got it for £55 in NETS. treated myself to a beta seat box as well, I'm risking looking like I know what I'm doing now!

Also, I HAD to get a new rod...it wasn't right putting the new reel on my old 10 quid go outdoors rod, so I've ordered a powerstix 11' 6 pro bass 2-4oz.

I'm not obessesed with Penn or anything, and I didn't just get it so it matched! It just happened that the best rod I could find (going by hours of reading reviews) in my price range was the powerstix. I got it for £69, it's been replaced with the rampage now, but I couldn't find one bad review of the powerstix.

Looking forward to the rod arriving, and getting out to christen them. Probably too skint to buy bait now though! Could go out spinning and try for a Bass though :o!

Thanks everyone for all the input.
