Which multiplier ?

No idea how far, but...

No idea how far, but...

... I went to Blyth jetty this morning, just to see if I can still throw a line.

Diawa Moonraker Z, Abu 7000 C Syncro with 30lb mainline, 60lb shock leader and a 6oz lead. No trace, hook or bait - just seeing whether I can still cast without taking my own head off ;)

From the jetty end closest to Ridley Park on my first try I got about two thirds over the river.

A dozen or so casts later I was dropping consistently about 30 or so yards short of the concrete base of the pier.

On my last try I dinged to concrete pier base, so decided to call it a day on a high note rather than wrap the rod round my own neck on the next bash :)

I've never been a distance chaser, but I wouldn't mind knowing how far that is as a benchmark.

Anyone got any ideas ?

I know I'll cast shorter with a hook trace and decent bait on, but I figured it was respectable enough for a levelwind reel and (I hope) that I can get further again with a non-levelwind reel and lighter main line.

Any ideas ?

And for the record, I plan on casting a lot shorter than that when actually fishing...

I remember measuring a few distances around Blyth harbour & piers using Google Earth some time ago; I think where you are talking about it's approx. 130 yds or so across to Cambois pier.

Gary :)

Never thought of that :)

Google maps puts it at approx 130m which is about 142 yards.

I'm not saying I can do that consistently mind, especially if you factor trace and bait into the equation, but it gives me a baseline for comparison for when I get the SL30SH into active duty.

I'll aim for Holy Island next time I go and see how close I get :D

based on the preferences you gave = level wind , and bearing in mind you already bought some reels, I suspect the ABU 7000 will end up being your favorite. I would say that if you decide to "expand" on your reels try looking on Ebay for a good quality i.e. old 7000C (after 1981 for easier bearing replacements). They fetch about £70 and are much better than the new models.

Tight lines !

Akios 757cs arrived today.

Great service from Fishtec :)

First thoughts straight out the box is that it's a classic Abu 7000 that's been overengineered.

I've not taken the sideplates off yet but it really does look and feel like a classic 7000 made under license, which is no bad thing.

Silky smooth action, the ratchet is loud enough to wake up a dead stick, and the gearing picks up and engages the spool VERY positively.

If German car engineers ever build a reel this is what they'll come up with !

Looking forward to trying it on Friday, and I'll post with pictures once I have line on the reel and a few casts with it.

Good first impression though...

strangely enough mate I had a whack at it a canny few years back using a moonraker Z also and a slosh 30, the route i took was toward the endish, I measured using google earth approximately 170 yd. Directly across I think is about 155yd so you've done better than you think mate. Anyway if the distance is disputed I'm not bothered as i've chucked across the river at Hebburn which is further:D:D
One thing though, the moonraker Z needs a lot of viagra so a distance like that, whether 140 or 170yd, aint bad at all.

Apologies for the rubbish pictures - Akios 757cs next to 7000c Syncro:

You can certainly see the commonality between the Akios and Abu.

Looking forward to seeing whether it equals or even surpasses the Syncro
:)

g.ordon: small world :)

I'll be using Blyth jetty as my benchmark to see how I manage with different reels, regardless of what distance it is. I know what I can do with my Syncro so that's going to be my baseline. The Moonraker Z takes a lot of loading up and, personally, I find it a little temperamental (entirely my fault, not the rod's).

I get on much better with my Penn INXS 2 rods but I deliberately use the Moonraker because it's tough to cast (for me). Good results with it usually indicate greater potential with other kit :)

I'm keen to try my SL30SH when it arrives - maybe I'll hit Holy Island after all ;)

Look mate, I don't think we can be talking about the same rod here

This is my moonraker MR-ZS 130M 13' 4~6oz and it bends like a garden cane, yours must be a different model I think.

No, mine's the exact same model.

When I say I find it tough to load I don't mean tough to bend - I think I could better describe it as tough to time properly.

Basically I find my other rods a little more predictable, but I admit that's entirely my fault.

The rod certainly delivers very well, when I manage to bring everything together properly, and I thoroughly enjoy fishing it :)

OK mate, I'm with yer now. I only use the moonraker on the odd occasion now and when I do it's remarkable adjusting to the action compared to a kompressor but never the less it's still a good rod. got mine about ten years ago for around 100 notes or so, how about yours?

Mine's about the same vintage, but I have no idea what it cost. I got it as part of an insurance settlement when my house was burgled.

Luckily for me I had photographic records of all my gear and only some of it was nicked, so the insurance company were very helpful. Two rods and reels that I'd left downstairs for a session the following day were swiped - just as well they didn't go upstairs, where the mother load lives in a cupboard :)

I'd recommend that everyone should photograph their rods and reels and keep an inventory of their gear, if for no other reason of protecting your best interests in the unhappy event of theft/burglary. I hope it never happens to anyone out there, but if it does, photographs make all the difference.

Here endeth the lecture :)

I misread that first time mate, I thought you said 'upstairs where the mother inlaw lives in a cupboard' lol.

Good advice

Does anyone use backing of any kind to build up the spool of their multiplier ?

I don't see much point in winding 300 yards of line on when only half is ever likely to be used.

Thoughts ?

yer mate, initially just load it up completely with the line you'll be using then when yer come to reline just pull off what you've been chucking plus say 30 yards more. You can tell how much line has gone off just looking at the colour compared to line that's never seen the light of day, this is your benchmark. So taking it a further 30 or 40 yds will allow for improved chucking. hope this helps.

Bought an SL30SH today from Sport & Leisure in Blyth.

I ordered one from a local eBay seller 6 days ago but there's been no communication and no reel so I decided to pick one up locally and when (read "if") the eBay purchase turns up I'll give it to my mate. Price difference between eBay and John's shop was negligable, so I should have probably just gone there to begin with and saved myself the aggravation

Penn 525 and Saltist reels look very nice indeed - I may dabble in one or both sometime in the near future but, for now, I'm happy to use the levelwind reels for fishing at night and the SL30SH for daylight and/or distance fishing.

All things being equal I'll do a trial run with two rods on Whitley Bay beach tomorrow lunchtime an hour either side of the high tide, just to iron out the wrinkles in my kit and get myself back in the swing. Who knows; I may even catch a fish...

Yes, sport and leisure is a cracking shop mate, i got my swedish blue elite there a couple of months ago for a ton. Baits spot on also. Infact I was up there a couple of weeks ago and he had another brand new original blue elite in so i bought that also. Ha

Yeah, John has a few 'proper' made in Sweden Abu reels.

I've shopped there for years for shooting a fishing stuff - top bloke to deal with :)

off to Whitley beach shortly to get a line wet :)

I know conditions/time of day aren't favourable but after so many years out of sea angling I'm buzzing :D

Nothing like freezing your nads off and the prospect of catching nothing to get your blood racing...

;)

Have a good weekend everyone, whatever you're up to :)
