Fishing is just awkward at the moment. Bad? No! Just very strange

Well...what happened...A Lot!

We ventured out at 7:30. The recent herring fiesta was still on and the mouth of the river Wear was full of them. Within no time we had around 50 of those yummy fish.
On the downside...it was absolutely pooring with rain....we actually could not run out to the wrecks yet, because we could not even see. Soon all three of us looked like drowned rats. I actually had to change to a second set of waterproofs...the first was soaked. I was actually freezing!! In August!:o

Eventually we found a gap in the rain and hurried out to a 7nm wreck. On the way we stopped at a wreck at 3.5 miles...it was raining again and too uncomfortable for fast boating. At that wreck, we had an instant nice cod of 6lb and mackerels....good start...but I was cold.

Eventually we managed to go to the aspired wreck. Instantly we had fish again. A cod fell to Ashok...who otherwise had nothing but bad luck. He got stuck to the wreck multipple times and eventually ran out of braid and could not reach the wreck. His second reel then got a huge birdnest. Ashok spent 90% of his time sorting this kind of annoyances out.

I was lucky and soon connected to the ling. First I lost a good one half way up, but thereafter brought up a nice lumpy ling just short of 16lb.

easy to notice how wet I was....good ling though

towards the slack water we caught a few more nice ling up to 9 1/2lb

3 buckets: one full of herring, one has a few ling and cod in and one keeps the mackies (which we did not really target today)

Pete then hooked into something really awkward and obviously massive. He laboured an almost dead mass up, but the odd nod suggested it was a big fish or whatever. I said it must be a seal or a fish in the mid twenty lb class...we will never find out as Nessi let go 10m under the boat.

then Ashok ran out of time and we needed to return him to the marina....a 7 miles run home and we were very happy with the result...apart from Ashok who was moaning all the way home!

Pete and I decided that we want to give it another try...mistake!

At 4 miles out cruising at 17kn, the engine shut down and we could not restart it.
We had a nice long cosy 5kn journey home on the aux engine.

Eventually we arrived back home and the weather was nice and the buckets still full.

lets hope the engine has only something minor...cant wait to get out again.

great report and pictures--you certainly look wet--3 cheers for the auxilliary engine--hope you get the other one sorted easily/cheaply

Nice 1 Norbert - Nothing spoils a trip more than when its ****ing down and losing loads of gear at the same time. Nevertheless you still had a few fish for your efforts. Canny report and pictures. Will be out on Saturday, and weather dependant a trip to the graveyard for the 2nd time this season. If not, we will be heading north of the Tyne. Fingers crossed the forecast holds.

I was soaked before we left the marina yesterday but the rain stayed off all the time we fished. I too had a large heavy lump to haul up, it was a huge boulder. I think it weighed about a "stone" I returned it unharmed. Any idea what was wrong with the motor Norbert. Hope it isn't anything serious.
