Species hunters on SSP, 6/7/14

Got down to SSP about 7.30am, thinking we'd get on the 44 before the hordes turned up, but the mark was already taken by Lambtonworm and L_muslibar (at least it wasn't macky bashers!).

Andy and Liam were pulling in good fish from the start on the 44 so me and Sean set up around the 45 mark. I nipped up to the end and bagged a Mackerel for fresh bait, and a Launce, for the species hunt.

Back at the 45 we were into Dabs early on and Sean got a fairly big one at 31cm.

The fish kept coming up until high tide, all Dabs and a few Plaice.

I had the float out as well, trying both sides of the pier for more species; not a sniff on the harbour side, but on the seaward side I got a couple of Coley, and a nice Ballan Wrasse.

Around midday, Fishingmark came along (four of the species-hunt-obsessives fishing the forties today!), but by then the fishing died right off, and the macky bashers were showing in numbers. It was a nice day though so we stuck at it all afternoon.

Things started looking up when I got a good knock, and reeled into something heavy - I had my hopes up that it was either a good Plaice or a decent Codling, it turned out to be an edible crab (not massive but I think the drag made it feel heavier).

On my very last cast to use up the last of the rag, I got a knock, which turned out to be another Plaice.

Packed up and left at about 5.30pm (leaving Fishingmark, who had just got a Plaice on his Plaice rig, and also caught a Mackerel while reeling in has crab baited pulley rig - macky bashing in style!).

A canny days fishing with Dab, Plaice, Wrasse, Coley, Mackerel, Launce and a crab.

:D

Canny afternoon Andy. I got another plaice, a couple of dabs and a flounder after you left. The crab looks smaller in the pic than it was, I could barely get my hand across the shell to pick it up.

I know, that's what I was thinking about the crab. Glad the fish came back on for you, must of been that magic powder you had!

Well done lads, looks like you had a busy day again , what is the secret powder ?

It was good to meet up again, plenty of fish and species caught and decent weather cant ask for much more than that really well a Gurnard or Dragonet would have been good but maybe next time.
