Something Strange in the Tyne at South Shields 01/03/2012

I headed out for my weekly session on the Tyne last night. I decided to try Middle Docks in Shields so headed over there. I could see the lasers from the Global Rainbow at Whitley Bay on the drive over - it looked like they were shining right down the coast. Very good. Anyway I arrived at Middle Docks but was put off by the five foot metal fence with lots of pointy bits on top and I didn't have any ladders in the car :) so I moved down river to Brighams.

I was into a small tommy on my second cast then another one right on high water followed by a teeny tiny whitey and another tommy a bit later on. Absoulutely loads of crabs too! They were nicking my baits at great speed and I landed loads of them sometimes two at a time. Baits used rag, squid, mackeral, prawn and razor. Fished from 7.30pm until 1.30am.

It was a still evening , the water was totally flat and the reflections from the north side meant I could see the water surface clearly (see pic). At around midnight something caught my eye. At first I thought I had picked up a big bunch of sea weed around my line where it entered the water then I realised it was nowhere near my line and it was slowly moving up river against the flow. It was difficult to make out any detail and was just a black silhoutte against the reflections. It had a roundish head on top and a length of back visible about 3 feet long. I adjusted my headlight to spot and tried to shine it towards it at which point it must have seen me and it disappeared below the surface with a splash. It did not look like a seal as they usually only show their heads not their backs and they drop down silently. I have only seen something like this once before and that was on the Isle of Mull and it was a sea otter. Do we have otters in the Tyne? I would be pretty amazed if we do but that is what it looked like.

So an interesting evening .. four undersize fish, a strange animal, laser lights and my bait suffered the death of a thousand crabs. And so ends this weeks instalment.

There was a small dolphin/porpoise in the river last thursday near tynemouth pier,
was only about 2 - 2 1/2 foot long could well have been it

I saw an otter in the Tyne at Ouseburn about three weeks ago. It was in amongst the moored boats and it definitely wasn't a seal as it had a long tail. When it saw me it disappeared.

Nice report mate!! Its always eerie when your out by yourself in the dark and see or see something you can't quite identify!!! Im sure I've gave myself the ****s when I've been out on the rocks at night alone!! I've also heard of Otters in the Tyne!

i no theres a lot of bad press aboot otters and that but i think your luky to see one mate there prety rare id love to see them me as i think its good to see an increase in wild life in the tyne and other sourounding rivers. because of the laws of poloutation years ago its ne wounder nowt was in the rivers now there cleaner and look after things are looking up with wildlife. and nice post by the way. ne gud those metal fences 1 slip and its well i,ll leave that to ya imagiation :):):)

sounds like your animal encounter was a otter, they are kicking about down their. If it was smaller i would have suggested it to be a mink, as they are also around their, feasting on the rats.

Seen a big male otter in the wear few month ago, at mine and young andys feet milling around. Awesome site to see.

It certainly was a great site thst buddy, it must have swam past us 4 times and in the spotlight of our headlamps was no less than 4ft away, a lovely and amazing site. :)

I was reading on another forum I'm with and a guy seen a massive fin when fishing up in Scotland well north. A did some digging around on Google and discovered to my amazement that there's a pod of 26 killer whales hanging around up there and they were last seen heading south! :D:D:D

If you didn't know Killer whales (Orcas) are probably one of my top 3 favourite animals, if not no.1... if I ever seen them off shields pier you'd hear me shouting happily for miles. Must get myself a good quality camera for to take mint photos, you never know what you might sea when fishing, that's the beauty of being out in the natural world. ;) :)

your right andy, shields is a funny place, i remeber seeing a huge pod 250-300 dolphins all breaching and heading south only about 400 yards off the end at 1st light, 2 trawlers stopped and watched. Every summer you see the porpoises, usually a minky wale rocks up, i've seen a basking shark off the north arm and a big leatherback turtle strolling along the side about 7-8 year ago one summer.

Wouldnt suprise me if a pod of orcas turn up, they have been sighted around the sea houses, so they are not far.

canny report as for the otters ive seen two of them down the walkway a few time's nice to see

these are the things that makes fishing special because you wouldn't see such things sitting in the house. its a great hobby and sometimes you even catch a fish or 2 :D

and otters in the sea are cute things bit like Commerants nice to watch but watch them eating all the fish on a fresh water lake or pond and its another story
