well with the wind blowing a hooley yesterday and the forcast for tomorrow looking rather damp we decided to delay our fishing trip this weekend and go for a Sunday outing rather than the usual Saturday pitch.

When I say we I mean myself, Tony (cabin boy in the making) and guest for the day Keith (Keithb) unfortunately Steve had an appointment with a team of car builders at Nissan this weekend :(

got to say we found the forecast (XCWeather - Wind Map - Britain Observations) to be absolutly spot on today, when it said the wind would drop ..... it did , and when they said it would return from the south ... it did .. and when they said it would rain .... it did :)

Set out at the reasonable hour of 7.30am this morning since the tide hit bottom at about 6.45 so we missed the slack water and decided to fish the tide (what there was of the couple of metres or so lift) up and over the top.

Headed straight out for about 4 miles and stopped to pick up mackerel for bait (goodness mackerel is £6.35/kilo in the supermarkets ! ) bang bang bang , nee probs there as all three of us dug into tigers in the top 20 ft of water. Bait box full it was a short run of 1/2 a mile or so to first wreck.
I think Keith was first in with a cod on a pirk (caught in the back) that got lifted to gunwhale height before twisting itself free and headed back down to the depths ..... a fitting result considering the way it was hooked ....

Next for a big hookup was myself and on the way up called for the gaff as this was surely a PB .............. :) lol unfortunately it was someone elses snagged weight , tackle and 100ft of mono which I swear fought all the way to the top :)

Then it was Tonys turn with a call for "open the back door it`s a good un !"
Turned out to be a 9.5 lbd ling, well done tone, but not quite the double :)

the next couple of hours were just fish after fish after fish, lots of ling in the 2 - 3 lbd size (which were all returned), and a number of cod ranging from 3 to 6 lbd.
In an effort to sustain the ling population we returned many today , including some in the 5-6 lbd range (see the video when its released)

At this point we we contemplating splitting fish boxes as one was full, one was filling and the third was wedged under the first ..... lol signs of a good day.

Then ......................... it just stopped ! no fish, no bites.

Seems the top of the tide , as small as it was, just turned that switch off .....

hours passed with no more takes until at one point I called a "lets move to another wreck" and as keith lifted his rod , he struck into a belter.

oh to see a grown man in pain :) this specemin didn`t want to be caught, as fast as Keith was winding it was stripping line (almost to the point of pouring water on the reel bearings to keep em cool :) )
the video in it`s raw condition must have lasted 20 mins lol :)
Al last and with the help of the gaff it was boated , a magnificent 13.5 lbds cod, crackin Keith mate

well thats about it really, roundup was, ----- lots of fish , many put back, great day , thanks Tony and Keith ..................... (lets do it again next weekend :) )

Just a few pics for now but the video will follow in time (it does take some time to prepare :) )

Keiths first (retained :) ) cod of the day .....

"Dont they hand on" :)

Excellent day Norman....thoroughly enoyed it - I always come home and "bore" the missus with our tales of daring do :D

Big well done Keith...longest 3 minutes of your life pulling up that lunker :D

and if anybody ever wondered what the last thing anything unfortunate to get in the way sees when a 13lb Cod fancies a nibble...

Cheers as ever Norman and again nice one Keith ;):D

Great stuff Norman and thanks for a fantastic day out. :)

Bit strange for me seeing a rod bent double only to hear "get the camera" instead of "get the net" :D but I got there in the end.

Fantastic report, but I'm still not sure about the photos, could you maybe photoshop out a few of my chins? :D:D

Well done on the PB ling Tony

Thanks again!!!

Canny report lads. Keith's doubler looks quite thin as well, wonder what it would have weighed with a stuffed belly.

Well done lads, defo worth the trip out then.

Bet your well chuffed with that beauty Keith. Started catchin fish instead of the wreck for a change.

Look forward to the vid.

Glad you had such a cracking day ( as per ) lads ,some nice fish there .
