There was no chance it was ever not going to be good ......
might be a few double negatives in there but I'm sure you get the jist ...
Picture the scene ... It's july, work is over for the week (for us "young uns" that still do it
), the weather forecast is excellent (and they got it right for a change) the tide is neither neap nor spring just somewhere in the middle and on top of all that .... the internet is stuffed full of local catch reports of big hauls of big fish ...... whooo hooo let me out there ....
The general thoughts were that the fish are on their way moving north as they "seem" to do each season and with reports of doubles abounding (yes rich you
) it was time to go for quality in lieu of quantity so the decision was made to go east and north and put some miles beneath the boat this weekend, deeper water and more distant wrecks.
Out at 3.00am and fuelled up to the top (just in case) we were off.
High Tide was at 4.45am so we didn't expect much until it started to ebb sometime after 6.00 but the early start was to position ourselves miles away from the tyne and await the switch on.
Managed to get in position as it were before the tide turned and after shaking up the cabin boy to keep him awake (too many parties) it was "Lines in" .......
Well, the sunrise was spectacular as ever and the sea was flat with a large slow roll ... but the fish .... they just didn't want to play.
Met up with shady and crew who had the same gameplan and were also suffering the same dissapointments .... UNTIL ....
We found one wreck that held and that was it almost the switch that turns them on, first for Tony was a respectable 7lb cod followed closely by what I thought was the bottom coming up ..... turned out a nice 15lb Double cod ...
bert Keith and Jim were digging in too on Shady and the scene was complete ... soon after Tony (afraid of calling doubles before seeing them) whispered what do you think as his rod (well my rod but that's another story) bent hard under the weight of what turned out to be an 11lb cod... another double. All was well and the day was turning out to be just as expected, the sun shone on us the sea kept flat and the fish kept on coming and they were all BIG 5,6,7,8,9lbs and doubles, so big in fact that there was a sudden bang like a gunshot and I turned to see the broken off top half of Tonys rod dissapearing down the line after a little too much bend.
The water was crystal clear today such that you could see the fish coming up from such a distance ... made even better as they arrived two by two at times whiting, mackerel and Cod ....
This of course was on the understanding you could actually get down through the mackerel ... even shads caught mackerel every other drop today there must have been a carpet of them half way down.
All in all a great day out where we managed to cover some 63 mile visiting wrecks I'd only ever had numbers for ....
Excellent day, great weather, great haul, great company ...... roll on another sunny day.
A few pics of the day ....
Sunrise pics as ever .... the sky changes in only minutes .....
and more ........
Tony's new found love of oranges ..... (he never seemed to throw the peel away
" )
First of the day for Tone ... 7lb I think it was (weights are verified by scales not guessed)
And my nice 15lbder
Followed closely by tony's 11lbder
And the two doublers together .... tony unhappy methinks at having to stage manage the doubles for a picture ...
As ever it's aways more fun to fish with friends around in other boats .... here with bert, keith and Jim on Shady
the animals may have gone into the ark two by two but today the fish came aboard Slinky two by two
, a very satisfying double header.
All in all a wonderful day, best this sseason due to all the aspects fitting together, the sea the sun the doubles and of course the people ....
something to take home ......
one last picture ......... do you think he's going to too many parties .... ?
cheers folks, hope you enjoyed ....
