Sl30sh spool rubbing?!

I have just acquired an old sl30sh from my dad who had 3. I got it because there is a grinding sound when turning the handle. I initially thought that the bearings would be shot but after opening it up the insides look brand new.
After a little closer inspection I've worked out the problem is the spool catching on the casing of the reel. There is no play on the spool when it's all back together so I'm a little stumped. I'm guessing the spool spindle could be bent slightly but it's not obviously if it is. Has anyone encountered this before and what's the solution? I had though about taking a fraction of the spool rim but am unsure if this would cause other issues, any ideas?

Spongebob cheers for that, it sounds like it is not that then as it casts free as a bird. It's just when your reeling in it sounded like a grinding but as I said I've pinned it down to the spool rubbing. The tighter the cast control cap is wound in the worse it sounds.

Nope spool and cage or spot on. This is why I'm stuck because the insides look brand new the bearings and nice and shiny washers look good, everything seems fine but obviously isn't. I'm think a new bearing and washer kit but don't want to shell out £20 or so if it doesn't fix it. Would care I've got a mate who works in a bearing factory but they work in odd sizes with letters and numbers rather than just the size in mm's.

Having read through what's already been posted, I'd say it's unlikely that the bearings are the issue. If they were shot, you'd notice it when casting (noise, vibration etc) - the same applies if the spindle were bent.

Is the "grinding" noise particularly bad at a certain point in one revolution of the handle...try turning the handle slowly and see if you can pinpoint a certain area where it's most noticeable...maybe it'll be when the handle passes the free-spool lever, or the gearbox for example. If this is the case, the most likely cause will be a bent shaft.

On the original SL30SH's, the shaft sits in a bearing located in the side plate. and if this is neglected it can wear, or at worst corrode & collapse completely - which will lead to a (usually) snapped shaft...if the bearing is worn, it might have just enough play that it's allowed the shaft to bend, although this is much more common in the newer SLX 30 SHA where Daiwa have chosen to replace the bearing with a bush, which can wear out pretty quickly leading to a bent shaft (something I've suffered several times with them!).

If this turns out to be the case, the only solution will be to replace the shaft & associated bearing. However, if the grinding is constant all through the turn of the handle without an obvious "high spot" I'd be more inclined to be looking at the gears - it may be that the pinion gear is not meshing properly with the main gear for some reason....a quick check of the gear teeth & surfaces should reveal any problem - you might notice a bit of burring on a few of the teeth for example.

It's always a bit difficult diagnosing problems without the reel at hand, but from what you've described, I'm leaning towards a problem with the shaft.

Gary thanks for that comprehensive reply, unfortunately on checking over the relevant point that you made, neither seem to be at fault. The only thing I can add is that, it is by far more noticeable when the cast control knob is wound right in.
When it's backed off then the problem seems a lot better. Although I have not had chance to cast the reel with the knob backed off so I don't know what it is like under load. The only reason I could possibly see for this being the case is that there is a slight step on either side of the spool, it is that which appears to be rubbing the frame of the reel.
I cannot find any scoring on any parts and it does not seem to affect the reels preformance, having used another sl30sh owned by my dad but it's just bloody annoying. Especially when everything to the best of my knowledge looks spot on with the internals.

Well despite my thought that the bearings where good it turns out that one of the spool bearings wasn't quite as good as the others. So a change of spool bearings seems to have sorted it!
So a sl30sh for a fiver isnt half bad in my eyes
