whats the best shockleader to use ?

i was watcing a dvd with alan yates and he uses tapered shockleader to reduce the size of the knot(join in the line).

if this tapered shockleader is anygood where will i get it from in newcastle area ?

I don't use tapered leaders, I've never found them to be much kop. Desired lengths are a problem if you need a longer leader. Just stick with spools, and practice getting your knots as small as possible. Plenty of saliva when tightening up is vital.

I changed reels really quickly on friday due to a shonky leader knot....had to fish the rest of the night using the okuma 30 with 30lb straight thru'...I'd have preferred to stay with the slosh and lighter line with a leader...

I use this knot...get it right though and do it properly, I rushed it when getting the reel ready and it gave way at the slightest hint of pressure...lesson learnt with that one

Like Sean says - plenty of slavver and it makes it easier to tighten up

cheers for the replies lads i never normally use shockleader just 25lb ultima distance line and ive never snapped it yet but saying that i dont try and cast to hard with it lol thats why i was wondering about shockleader so i can belt it out

I use greased weasel too. one rule of thumb tho' if you use 5oz. leads use 50lb. shock leader. 6oz. leads use 60lb. shock leader.. see the patern...

Make sure you have at least 3-4 turns of shock leader on your reel when you cast... i like to have more (about 10 turns) in case i have to lift a big fish up from a high pier..

Get shocked up bud and start whacking it out...

Is that the general rule of thumb for pendulum casting, I always use six onz sinkers and only use 40lb shock leaders and have never been able to snap it, and I give it a good hard thump. On my heavier reels I use 35lb straight through and again have never snapped off through force of casting.

Scott i love these tapered leaders. They look good and feel good.
The knot is small so it does not hurt your thumb when you cast. The knot also does not catch on the end eye of your rod.It is also a good guage for when you reel in. It also adds a lot of strength to you line in the water so handballing up a fish is easier. It also adds strength for casting bearing in my mind my main line is only 15lb.
I recently bought one of these off e-bay and i think its good value.

I should have got 15lb to 50lb never mind i still use it.

My old reel the abu 7000 which i also fish has 30lb line on all the way through-strong as horses this stuff and ideal for ocky beaches.
My Penn has the 15lb on for sandy or clear ground areas.

Dont waste time buy a bulk spool of 60lb coloured shocker and a spool of 80lb for traces.

Should do you for 99 percent of the time.

Andy Rutherfords shocker is excellent and £10 for 2 spools (I think).

50lb is a little light for pendulum casting and for trace bodies on 6oz + bait (which could be 2oz!!!)

Let me first say that I respect everybodys right to use what they want but I personally could never understand why anglers continue to use greased weasel as shocker. Its got a memory like an elephant ! I also dont see why we have use use a dedicated shocker, or what greased weasel has got that many other line havent . I agree with Chukka, I just use a bulk 60lb spool of Daiwa tournament, and am more than happy with it. I used to use plain old Daiwa sensor and had no trouble with that either, and its cheap as chips !

i just used 50lb line mate it does the job and its cheep as chips! will show you the knots i use next time were out!

just a thought, But, how much difference do you all think a knot makes to a cast 5 - 10 - def not 30 yards

please think of the person to your right because thats who you are going to hit if you snap off , rule of thumb 10lb bs for every oz you chuck.

From my experiences a correctly tied tapered leader knot (say 50 lb-> 15 lb) is stronger than a tapered leader with a conventional knot.
