Shimano speed master..

Anyone familiar with these reels? picked a one up for a couple of quid today,

Solid reel, similar to the slosh 20 and can be magged up. I had one for years and no problems with it, pretty much bomb proof.

I've just had a look on WSF, few threads on there about them, should've looked before I posted the thread nevermind tho quite a few people saying they're similar to the 535's meant to be great casting reels, think i'll have an outing with it tomorrow see what it's like

Cracking casting reel,if you can handle it.The drag system is the best i,v used on any reel.
The thing to watch is the spool,they are very thin cast alli and can shatter if too much pressure is put on them.
So don,t be trying to skull drag fish through kelp with it.

Thats spot on! I had one years ago, spools are just not up to the job. You simply cannot wind in anything over 2lb without the spools exploding. I used mine in the tyne and went through a couple of spools in as many weeks before getting rid. A slosh or 525mag are a better option imo.

Can't go wrong for a tenner though reading a lot of mixed reviews on them, some say they're the mutts nut's and others complaining they're far too quick ect, suppose it all boils down to personal preference though

I have 4 , two magged and two centrifugal brakes. Great reels but for beach or light boat -more like Shimano Calcutta with pre set clutch. Fast as hell for a reel with bearings outside the spool. Try two big blocks in the brakes to start with or better still a mono mag from blackdog tackle. Under fill them as well.

I'll be taking it out tomorrow anyway's see what it's like, been told of a few mate's to definitely get it monomagged, appreciate the info lad's cheers and too right mick money well spent i'd say..

As Terryc says get it magged , I've got 2 magged and one cf and the magged are the best , bullet proof Japanese reel shimano stopped making coz they cost to much , once ya get the feel you won't part with it and you'll be looking for another , tight lines

I had one years ago. In all honesty it was the smoothest, quietest multiplier I've ever owned. VERY fast spool when casting, but once mastered........terrific. The only thing I didn't like about it was the spool was quite high on the rod when "thumbing" it during casting. Never had any problems with the spool "bursting" and I did manage cod to 10lbs on it. Never used it over rocks mind, as I regarded it as a distance casting reel rather than a "bully" rock reel.
If you picked it up for a tenner, you've got a bargain mate if it's in good condition.

Which model do you have? The newer models have a lot more plastic parts on them and they aren't quite as good but as previously said, the older models are bullet proof. They come in two sizes aswell, roughly the same size as a SL20SH or SL30SH..... I have the smaller model. It isn't a reel to learn on but once you can master it you wont look back.... brilliant casting reel.... Mine must be 20yrs old, runs like a dream and is the main reason my SL20 is still in a box having only been used a half dozen times! For that price you have an absoloute bargin mate.

Oh, and as mentioned, get some break blocks into it... it really is insainly fast without them

I've just bought one couple weeks ago for £30 it was in a right state, but I've cleaned it up and stuck some new spool bearing in it, took it on the pier the other day lovely chucking reel. Mines the 11fs

Cheers for the help lads, and its a tsm iic, had a few cast's with it today really impressed with the reel absolutely cracking reel it is, best 10 pound i've ever spent, the line lift is a bit iffy, so a monomag is a must
