Hi all
once again record breaking herring have been taken from our piers or so it first appears, but rather than getting your arms full of prizes from angling mags for a record breaker the chances are you will end up with a hefty fine instead. The fish are not herring but shad which are a protected species and must be returned, ignorance is no excuse. A diagram to help anglers identify these fish is available in the Alan Charlton pages, p-lease feel free to copy it, if you have a web site, tackle shop or club house could you please make this available, as a general rule of thumb if you catch a herring bigger than 14oz, I suggest you put it back.

Shad?

Shad?

A lad caught this on Blyth pier a couple of weeks ago. He swore it was a bass, i told him it was a shad and they were protected. It still went in his bag.

could well have got him a big fine if he had been stopped, even if it had been a bass and not a shad it is certainly well undersize

How does the fleet stand on the shad? i take it they cant land them and just chuck them over the side before returning to port.
