It's 25 years since I last fished the Open; can't remember the numbers from that year but I do remember we moved the weigh in from The Knack to the leisure centre because of the entry the year before (this was in the days of Clifford House, way before the building of the new HQ).

1988 I do remember well; it was the year BBC Newcastle did a programme focussed on the Open. It was part of their "Peculiar Obsession" series and was called "Jim and Alex and Chris and Ken" (Dobie, Harvey, Stringer and Robinson) and followed our four (and others) through the day of the comp. Used to have a copy on VHS (now sadly lost); the entry that year was about 1300 and the footage shows the beaches and piers with anglers literally shoulder to shoulder all the way along the coast.

Sadly I think the days of 1000 plus entries (the record entry for the Seaham Open was 2002 anglers IIRC) are long gone, but for the first time since I moved away after 1989 I'm going to have a go...

I think the winning fish will come from the northeast coast 😄

Again, a lot of hard work gone into this Geordie, well done to you and your colleagues.
very good prize table, good boundaries, just hope the weather gets up and drops off with a good turn out to reflect a weigh in and to help maintain this prestigious club.

its been going since 1912 and i think its the uk's 2nd oldest club to dover or something like that.

well done, best of luck, fingers crossed.

Paul

Thank you Paul for your kind words mate its nice to be reconised as it is a head buster to sort out just hope the fish play ball on the day forecast looks ok so good luck to all who fish:cool:

Tickets are selling fast lets hope the forecast changes a bit last i looked was not good gusts to 38mph sw a think this comp is cursed but some one will have a good day

Just seen a picture posted on Whitby sea anglers facebook, theres a cracking sea on. Very strange in a westerly like, so hopefully might be a bit on come the weekend

Still debating whether to fish it like

It's something to do with the back end of some storm forecast pond flat Sunday no swell at all.

F*ck that then im not fishing it

A daft fish will win it but i cant be arsed to camp out to get on the popular marks. If the sea was away you could turn up anywhere and have a chance

Might sound like a daft question but this will be my first proper comp, when people are on about getting to their favourite mark early sunday morning...whats stopping them fishing before the match starts ? will there be stewards everywhere ?
Me and my son both got south pier pegs so doesn't really apply to me, just wondering...

sore,DAFT QUESTION.read the rules, your not allowed to fish {say 1hour before match}. besty68,your a steward.if you want you can ask the angler next to you,to have a look in his bag, visa' versa.ps,good luck to all anglers on sunday.

That's not true reg no one can ask to look in anyone's bag unless they are the organising party.

Have read the rules but was wondering if club stewards would be present thats all, ask an angler if i can look through his bag !...worse than raking through a womans bag :o
I'm just in it for the experience as i'll be joining seaham club soon and will be fishing the club matches, never fished seaham south pier before, i know i'll need loads of leads but dont suppose it's worth asking for advise is it :D

Assume its the same as when I was on the committee, many years ago now (over 20). We'd act as stewards (I seem to remember, although it may be a flawed memory that committee couldn't fish the open) and be allocated a section to patrol. That would include checking bags pre the start of the comp, making sure people didnt start early etc.

There will be stewards dotted about here and there and also its in everybody's intrest who fishes to be vigelant /Also you must get your ticket signed when you catch a fish with estamated size + species

Go and find some one to sign your ticket or you will not be allowed to weigh in Phil this is the biggest way to keep a check on whats caught and a comp this big there will not be many places were people are secluded:question:
