Salt water fly fishing

Hi Everyone,

I have recently moved to Newcastle and would like to give salt water fly fishing a try. I was wondering if anyone had tried this before or knew of any locations where I could try this?

Interesting idea,any of the deep water,strong tide rock ledge marks in Northumberland I'm sure it would work.

If you're after cod, coalies, pollack, mackerel and wrasse on the fly then there are deep water marks at the Beacons (Newbiggin), Cullernose Point/Craster/Dunstanburgh Castle area, Beadnell and Seahouses. The beaches at Blyth, Cambois, Druridge Bay, Warkworth, Alnmouth and Embleton are worth a go for bass, flatties and even sea trout.

Thanks for the advice. I thought I might first try on the estuary at Budle Bay, start with some flatties as I've been told that's quite a good area. Will let you know if I'm successful!

That's my neck of the woods mate. Budle bay is good for flatfish. It must be as I'm the worst fisherman in Northumberland and even I catch there. I don't think it makes any difference if it's high or low tide for the flatties but I've generally had more fish on low tide in and around the old jetty. There are sea trout at the right time of year in the estuary coming into budle bay and up the Waren burn to spawn.

Tim. You could try the pipe just south of Whitley Bay beach. Fish it at low water and only when the sea is calm. I've had the usual little coalies and pollock off there using a fly. The mackeral should be in next month and can be caught there too.

Fly fishing for bottom feeders? Wouldn't you have to go for predatory fish?

A fast sinking line or lead core “Chuck and Duck” get down deep enough for any mark on our coastline.
I’ve not had wrasse on a fly but have hooked plenty of other species.
Pollock and mackerel are predators that are well known for taking a lure, puddlers will hit them too and all will readily take a fly. A lot of the lads fishing from the boats use lures now as much as bait and do well for cod and to a lesser extent ling.

I want to have a go for the local bass this summer with a fly or lure.

Thanks for the advice! I'm down in Devon on holiday and I've had small pollock, bass and mackerel on the fly. Really excited to give it a proper go up north. Will let you fellas know how I get on.
