Decided to head up the pier today with 3 mates, we fished round about the 40 mark, not many bites, then mate landed a codling the size of my hand :p

Not long after that i had a granny fish, i think, well that's what i was told...

They packed up so i left with them and fished just after the brigade hut.
Loads of cracking bites, just couldn't connect them.

Managed to get 1 of them on, nice plaice, weighed 1lb.

Then it went dead, decided to pack up, go home and get on the beer son.

Well done on getting a few out,it was a granny fish (sea scorpion) but your plaice is a flounder mate ....

i thought plaice had the orange spots on them...?
not sure on the different types of flattys to be honest, just seen orange spots and thought it was plaice.

cheers though :)

It a floundan as it a greeny brown with spots place is a browny orange with spots bud flounder can Olson be dark dark brown close to black

Nice report mate well done with the catches, flatties are the hardest to identify imo, the easiest way to separate them is the dab has a curved lateral line before its head just above the pectoral fin. Dab's also have red/orange/yellow spots aswell and also has bigger eyes than the flounder or plaice.

A plaice more commonly caught in summer is rounder and the spots aren't as dull as a flounders spots, also the tail is rounder and smaller than a flounders which is squared flat if that makes sense. Plaice aslo have a bony bridge above head, think of a klingons head lol.

P.S did mention sea scorpions/granny fish are lovely looking fish in another thread, I was lying looking at that nasty looking thing haha, something to stick in the outlaws bed that. :D
