River Tyne South Shields New PB Whitey 02/02/12

Canny session on the Tyne last night 9pm - 3am over high water. Loads of knocks from the off and right through until I left. Missed a few bites but was using 3/0 hooks to avoid catching the tiddlers and flatties so the strategy worked (mostly) apart from three flatties. It was Flatty City last night - two lads I chatted with had had loads and were sick of them :)

I caught ten fish in total - 4 whiting, 3 codling, 2 flounders and 1 dab. All size except the codling (biggest 29cm). I had a couple of cracking whiting including my new personal best for that species 1lb 9.5oz beating my previous PB by an ounce and a half.

Bait of the moment was raw tiger prawn which outfished all my other baits (the big whitey was caught on a single prawn). Some fish caught on rag too but other baits mackeral/razor/squid all went untouched. I've only been using raw tiger prawns for a couple of weeks but I am really impressed with it as a bait for the river.

Hi Trevor, I get them from Morrisons and Sainsburys at the moment but I am going to go over to the chinese supermarket wholesale place on George Street soon to see if they are any cheaper there in bulk. Morrisons charge about £3.50ish for a "fresh" pack but they have been pre-frozen so are not really fresh. One pack has loads of prawns and is easily enough for a couple of sessions if using other baits as well. They are cheaper in the freezer section but I can't remember how much sorry.

In the frezer section if i remember they are around 2.70 a bag, get more too i think. You gotta make sure there raw tho. They are a cracking bait, firm and dont turn to mush even if refrozen a few times, they tie on nice and look cracking presentation wise. :)
