I didn't fancy fishing the extreme low tide last night so I decided to grab a couple of hours kip then head out to fish the early high tide this morning (HW 3.45am). Got to Cobles Landings around 0.05am , set up my rod, bait on , went to cast then CRACK!! Snapped off my rod tip about 7 inches or so or my first cast. Bolleaux!! My hook must have caught between the boards of the wooden decking. Not happy.

Anyway, I usually fish with two rods so I didn't have to pack up and head home. I set up my other rod with a two hook flapper size ones (was trying for flatties), cast out and pulled in a nice little coley 35cm. An hour or so went by and I pulled in a double shot of what I think maybe some kind of blenny (see pic)? Maybe someone on here can help me identify them.

It went quiet after that so with about two hours left before high water I moved along to the Spirit of South Shields. The water was a lot deeper now so I changed my rig for a 3/0 pennel hoping for something decent and started casting out bigger baits. Ended up with one solitary flounder (doh!). Packed in about 5am.

All fish caught on ragworm. Other baits used squid, mackeral and prawn caught nowt. Water was fairly flat but full of floaters (weed, tampons etc). There was a slight breeze and some breaks in the clouds but no sign of the Northern Lights.

The other two are what we used call "greeners" proper name is viviparous blenny. The Tyne used to full of them when the river was polluted. They don't seem to like the cleaner water these days or some is eating them now that does like clean water !

nice report m8 . shame aboot ya rod i always check the end ov my rod and were the end tackle is b4 every cast me would hate this to happen to my rod

cheers pop65:)

Well done on your session mate, plenty fish to keep you happy, shame about the rod...

Yep, the tyne is still chocka block with those big Blennies. Went and cleaned my tyres oot this morning, digging a few out amd removing silt, and there were loads of those big blennies about, both in my tyres and under rocks. :)

Good report!

did ya get any crabz tho

Unfortunately I got none on this occasion, but a wasnt really down to get any, just doing some 'housekeeping' so to speak. I did find quite alot of very big cock crab that where in the process of becoming peelers, but they were just to pre-peeler state, not supprising since that water is still bitterly cold, like an electric shock when a dipped me hand into the water, so the crab season still a way off yet! :o

Think al wait till April now, let the crabs get more bro there peeling state and let the water temp hopefully rise by a few degrees. ;) :)

OTG casting? unlucky with rod mate these horror stories making me more aware all the time about my rods, I caught one of these eelpout/blenny's other week wriggley things they are. At least you never blanked for the efforts and broke rod.

Problem is coble landing is one of those places where you cannot do or attempt an off the ground cast, unless your rig is either clipped 'up' or you are using a plain lead.

The wooden decking there is full of slits and crevices between the wooden panels, an easy trap for hooks and gripleads, and if it either gets caught unseen by the angler, and he/she casts, on of three things could happen. The line could snap, resulting in nothing lost nothing gained, as the rig should still be stuck to the decking (unless your using a shockleader), and then/or the rig is well caught and the cast continues, resulting in either or both a snapped rod tip and a massive overun on the reel (if using a multiplier). :exclam:

It's always best to take care when casting there, as the last thing you want is injury to you and others around you, as well as damage to your gear and terminal tackle. Take care. :)

Yep I know that's why I was asking Andy mate, you wouldn't find me casting OTG there at all tbh like you say too many gaps. I also won't be climbing over chained barriers in the dark either, ;) like I say these horror stories keep me on my toes, its just unfortunate for those who bring these things to my attention. :D

But yeah I agree taking care is what its all about, its no fun sat in the A&E or at home after you broke your gear etc.

Not a numpty mate, just unfortunate to have learned the hard way. We all learn from mistakes like that, I made a few pulley pennels a few months back a size 2/0 up the snood and a 3/0 on the business end.

I wondered why the snood was snapping on retrieval I had a nice sized whiting on hook and the fish landed on ground with the hook still in its gob with a bit of line still attached, I realised the 2/0 hook had barbs on the back of the hook and wrapping the line around them was snapping the line. I was lucky it could of been a totally different story.
