Right Rod Type

I think I might have the reel sorted and it looks like a Penn 525. Only reason why I might choose it is simply the colour !!!! You can now get some idea of who I am lol...

Done some research on the NESA site about the shoreline and think I am right in saying some is smooth/sandy some is rough ground ?

With this in mind I am now looking to get a rod that could handle both types of fishing (if there is such a thing) or should I really go for one type of rod that is suitable for smooth/sandy ground, get some experience with that and then look at an alternative rod for rougher ground.

What are your thoughts about the best rod for beach/surf fishing ?

a tip sport would be a good rod.

powerful enough to cast 6oz and big bait all day, it will handle some of the rough patches but is happy to fish leads down to 4oz over clean ground if needed.

brilliant bite detection.

i use mine mainly for clean to mixed ground.

there are loads of rods that will handle the rough easily but are over gunned with a loss of bite detection and feel when it comes to smaller species over sand.

Chris, i've got a greys nitra and a greys apollo for beach and rock fishing. Both have served me well with no problems. You could do worse than go for one of these.

Yeah, Greys are part of the Hardy's company from Alnwick. They did have a shop within the premises where they sold gear - dont know if its still there though.

thanks for getting back to me. I have sent them an e-mail as I found a place in Alnwick that stocks or used to stock their items. Wait till they come back with a generic answer and I can then take it from there.

Chris...just pop into the factory shop in Alnwick, not far from Sainsburys.
They still have a few of last years rods at special prices.
Tell the lads there what you're after and they'll keep you right.

I've just been putting a Reelsport mighty thin through its paces what a cracking rod very powerfully light and very slim and a joy to cast for been a very powerfully blank it showed up whitey bites a treat

Just switched to a longer rod to use with FS and braid. I am not a good caster and was struggling to load up my Sonik SK3 and 525 set up. Got a Penn affinity 15' with surfblaster 8000 and first impressions are good. Put 30yds on my cast just with a smooth overhead action and seems to get baits out really well. There's 2 tips with it, one heavy and one lighter for calm conditions I guess. Haven't tried the light one yet. The rod is really light and slim and first impressions are good. great bite indication even with the heavy tip. Will let the lads know how I get on with it in future.
