highly recommended, cut into chunks, and stir fried quickly with ginger, lemon grass and a bit of fresh chilli!

skinning the little sods and filleting them is a different matter though
 
I must agree Mark, I have eaten a few Dogfish and find them quite tasty. Even SWMBO enjoyed them and she can be a bit on the parky side. I would not however try to cook them in the oven, the last time I brought some home I tried this method and they were absolutely disgusting and went straight into the bin. I really can't describe how awful they were lol.

about releasing fish, about 2 years ago me and the wife did a few hours night-fishing and i tell the truth,we were catching big cod one after the other,
i never seen anything like it and have not since!, must have been a big shoal of cod close in and they were fish around 3kg the biggest being 5.4kg. i took about 8 home to eat,the rest i put back. now we were the only ones catching because of the casting distance.
when i was putting them back,a few people were saying i was nuts! and "can i have one" and all that, i just said catch your own,thats why your here is`nt it!(most danes are short casters, and use really bad rigs)(danes) im only taking about pier anglers here)

iam never greedy and try my best to preserve as many as possible.but a little understanding of fish anatomy can help one see what chances the fish has.
cod, and dogfish have a strong survival rate, as do flatfish but they tend to swollow the hook and damages it gills.
an a quick death to anything living is decent,and you can still return it to the food chain.:cool:

What part of my statement do you find worrying willy?

i am on the committee of my local fishing club and i will be proposing catch & release at the agm, either using a points system for different species or basic weigh & release at point of capture. But i will still be taking home most codling i catch over 2.5lb (unless i have enough in the freezer) and i don't mind admitting it.

W e are a relatively small club (approx 20 members + juniors)& i would trust all of our anglers involved, i presume youre worries are for the larger open comps where big cash prizes are at stake, the fact is that people cheat in every aspect of sport & life, but remember the old saying "cheater's never prosper"? well Forums like this hopefully mean the cheats stand a much greater chance of being caught out, and hopefully they will.
 
You are right, I was talking mainly about the big open comps mate. Some people will cheat in whatever they do, not just fishing either. It is so sad that some people will do anything for their 15 minutes of fame.

I really hope it works for your club and that they all think it is the way forward. The best about clubs like yours is, in the future when new people join, they will accept catch and release as quite normal as it will be there for them from the beginning.

we will just have to wait and see if they all go for it jim. At the moment all of the small but in-size fish go to one of the club members who puts out a couple of lobster pots, so they are technically going back into the food chain, but i take no pleasure in killing a small 1lb codling just to weigh it in, (i still do it though, but never when pleasure fishing) i would much rather put them back & catch them in a couple of years time when they are a lot bigger!

on this whole subject of catch and releas, should we be taking a leaf out of the fluffchuckers book here and be using barbles hooks if we intend to let the fish go ?

Don't even need to invest in barbless hooks mate, just catch what you want for the pot then flatten the hook barb with a pair of pliers for the rest of the session...

good call mate, I wasnt talking about for me by the way, i dont catch anywhere near enough fish to worry about that lol
 
I don't catch ANY fish!
I'm so good at not catching fish that they want me to show other people my techniques in order to help re-build the fish stocks!

do you think the lad should have been allowed to weigh the fish then put it back or not.it was witnessed as i say by numerous club members

like you know steve ime a member of that club but had no idea the question was asked i wouldnt of had a problem with weigh and release i must of been in a world of my own lol
 
one of the reasons i dont fish matches is the general attitude of kill it to wiegh it in, you only have to look at the dumped fish after some of the comps to see what will be our own grave dug if the anti brigade get thier ways, i dont see many reports on the dogs being caught from this side but were i used to fish they were given a wieght of two pounds no matter what size, more especially because of the amount that were caught at some marks, personally i think comps should have roving judges or similar in place so that fish not wanted can be returned to hopefully be caught not only just another day but larger, as for cheats, no matter what avenue you take some will try to do it, obviously the clubs and other anglers aware of someone who has been caught doing so should inform the comp organisers if they see them fishing, sooner they realise they are being watched the sooner they will move onto another money making scam and leave the comps to the lads who fish the comps for the right reasons
