retrieving heavy fish from cliffs

had a walk along the cliff tops at ryhope just over a month ago and noticed a guy retrieving cod with a home made contraption.

it was simply a small ring, with a weight and large sharp hooks attached to it. - clipped to the main line then slid down to the fish with a rope attached.

i seen two good fish landed with this method.

one they managed to rope up the side, and the other was roped only to the cliff base, but got it when the tide retreated.

obviously a pulley rig would be no good for this method. as the ring would get stuck on its way down.

the lad showed me the device but i didnt see his rig not been too nosey

my question to my mateys is- which rig is suitable for this.

ive heard the yorkshire lads use a rig ideal for this method. wot is it?

Would it not be just a simple single clipped down rig Dean,if the ring was large enough and the weight heavy enough it should slip over whatever method you use to attach your mainline and hooklink,obviously keeping the hooklink a bit shorter than down by the sinker.

yeh ian i can see your point.

the ring should slide over both. but the sinker and fish still separated.

no different slidey rigs more reliable for this? not sure

If it was an Austrailian cliff gaff then the ring would need to be a fair size to slide over the grip lead when using a pulley, it can work with a pulley rig providing the ring go's clean over the weight.
The best rig is a plain old paternoster type rig where the hook snood is shorter than the weight length.

I think the problem with the one I posted is you can't use it on a pulley rig,
But as far as I'm aware if your hooked fish is above the grip weight on any style rig it'll work

the one i use will work with any rig and its been well proven many times the other one will work very well but ure stuck with one rig

Aye paulb yours looks good mate, think if I was making one I'd have 3 gaffs but make the loop bigger like your pic, but if yours is tried n tested why change it.

seems there is a few different methods,

as it happens, the device i seen wasnt much bigger than a key ring, just with an assortment of hooks and a weight attached...
