Hi LAds
4 years ago, I started what I called "The wee comp" To be fished annually on the Mull of Galloway. This (Ithink) is its 5th year, we never really compete, and there isnt a prize. Never was. It was more of a social get together, and what fun they have been!!>In recent years we stayed at "The Muirhead Guest house" In Portpatrick, Duncan and Marie always made us very welcome, I think Im right in saying Willywetegg, Sixfoot Steve, Sless,
Insanojackson, Myself (Im sure) AndyN have all stayed there. All will vouch that nothing wass too much for Duncan, who cooked great breakfasts, aalways made sure everyone had had enough, and enjoyed the fish we sometimes gave him, didnt moan when I trailed mud on his carpet, and never mentioned the fact we bounced off the walls at 2 am returning from the Crown, and no dout left his pristine rooms smelling of stale beer, sweaty socks, and the odd fart.I spoke to Duncan about 4 weeks ago, to confirm bookings for this years trip, and looking back he seemed quiet, and not as chatty as usual.
I rang another BnB for a single night booking for Steve and Jim, and the proprietor told me Duncan and Marie were selling up. I tried to ring last night to confirm my booking for This Weekend (Birthday) and got a number noit recognised. So last night I spent three hours booking 11 people in different digs, having been told Duncans place was closed.
I was somewhat surprised and dissappointed Duncan had let me down.
I should not have been. I found out today, That Duncan has lung cancer, and has weeks to live, so sold up to move near his son and daughter. He had left strict instructions with the new owner, "not to let the lads from Newcastle down" I feel truly ashamed for doubting him.
So, I would like to suggest, the lads who attend this annual hootenanny of a disguised fishing trip, hoy a fiver each in, and buy a trophy.
Id like to call it "The Duncan Muirhead Wee Comp Trophy" To be given for one year to the captor of the heaviest fish, on the annual trip. Not a Memorial trophy, as as far as I know He still lives. But as a token of gratutude to a man who always made us feel as welcome in HIS home, as we did in our own.
PS, there are two places available. 20/21 june.
COULD ANY MODS PLEASE STICKY THIS FOR A WHILE. Ta

Very sorry to hear that Paul, Duncan is a really nice man and nothing is too much for him. As you know I unfortunately can't make it this year but hope to make it again next year so I will be quite happy to put a few quid in towards a trophy mate. Just let me know and it will be there for you.

Jim.

thats very sad news
count me in
i will be attending
haway lads 2 places spare
im sure yous will have a great time

i promise

keep your fivers and send them to the cancer research people, I have plenty of trophies you can have Paul.

Good point Alan - and a brave man to say it.

A canny trophy is still a topper way of showing love, remembrance and respect though is it not!

I've heard a lot of negative things about cancer research and been advised to only donate to Cancer relief charities! Mad innit!

Hope the "Lump On" thing didn't appear crass :(

Thanks Alan, not looking for anything huge, If you have something that can be engraved, that would be fantastic. I think I can get it done4 free. and the donation suggestion is a great Idea.
Thanks.
PM sent.

Nice one Alan, great idea mate.

Don't worry Ian, you didn't say anything wrong mate ;)

Jim.

I thought i might have got us barred out of the guest house, i think the landlady took a dislike to me last year! especially when i accidentally put my cup on the table missing the coaster!!! big mistake!

on a serious note i agree its sad news and i would happily contribute a fiver, How about the mcmillan nurses as a cause?? i have seen their work first hand and there really good.

are we still in the same guest house then?? or a different one?

Thereby hangs a tale.

There is now only one twin room in the Muirhead, so Ive booked us into the one belonging to the neice of the man who has taken over the Muirhead(??) get it??
She has twin rooms, (its The Mull after all, not Brokeback Mountain):)

champion, god knows why she took a dislike to me, i was really well behaved!! one little mistake and that was it, I even gave her a nice pollack for her tea.

Hi Lads
I took the trophy Alan gave me to a friend in the trade, he rang today to say that it would cost him to replace the centre, polish the old names out, and re-engrave, is more than it woukld cost him for a trophy, so he says he will give us a brand new trophy, at what it will cost him. around £18 I think, and he will engrave it free of charge. It will be engraved as follows.
The Duncan Muirhead "Wee Comp" Trophy.

Ill post a pic when I get it off him.
