Hello lads back from our compo at Penarth. 18 boats with 8 anglers on each from all over the country. I landed on my feet with this baby.
We left the harbour via some massive lock gates (this was took on the way back in).
Then we went out and all waited for the off at 8am. Odd seeing 18 boats of all sizes and shapes waiting to go but when they did did they did.
The skipper decided the mark and our skipper who was ace chose mid channel. And by god did we get there quick at 28 knots.
We got to mid channel and skipper dropped the anchor and at 9 we started fishing. Nowt fancy just pennel rigs with big baits anchored to the bottom. I used a 12oz ball wait bout from Ed and more or less first drop got a Thornback ray.caught on dirty squid.
Some nice fish were brought up-this lad got a beutey Smoothound.(least i think it is)
After about an hour the tide started to rip and it was fierce we eventually had to up anchor and move to shallower water of about 50 feet.
The fishing slowed for this part of the day with dogfish keeping people busy. But for the lats hour we steamed back into mid channel and put the 8oz stick leads back on. I then saw the same lad who caught the smoothound catch the biggest fish i had ever seen a 31 pound conger on fixed spool reel uptider rod and 40 lb braid.
.
I had four fish in all and all new species. My thornie, A Blond Ray, A conger and a dogfish. Unfortunatly i did not photograph them with my card.
the blond gave me a fight which lasted at over 15 minutes. It was like shoot out at the ok coral who won. And i was using my supermag with 18 poud line on. My blonde wieghed 6lb. Skip took a pick put it has not worked. My other fish were released outside of the boat.
Hard work uptiding especially when you are at the front of the boat like me-much better downtiding at the back.
Mick.
