i was talking to a lad last nite and he was saying hes getting peeler out of his traps i always thought they started around april -may

I have heard in the past lads getting peeler up here out of there traps in March but normally peelers don't start to show until April-may, depends on water temps, weather etc really.

hi they are about in tyne about march but you have to hunt them down they are scarce freshwater normaly spoils qauntity,if you go on various forums throughout country you will normaly find people talking about peelers and you can normaly find useful contacts i have plenty, it is not hard to find a supplier for peeler all year round is it worth the price you have to pay for them and are they effective all year round thats what you have to ask yourself i have my opions.

i am no expert but i know everything lol

Yep totally agree John/R it isn't that hard to find peeler crab suppliers, and there are normally a few Peelers about in March but not in any numbers up here in the North east.

depends on the weather a good week or 2 of warm weather and sunshine may fetch the odd ones to start there early stages,i can remember back a few years ago when there was in good numbers in febuary

First post, but remember from having loads of traps in Exe estuary MANY years ago - cleaning them out (as you do of silt etc) would always reveal a few Jan/Feb but no real moult until late March onwards.

I,ll look for them but god knows if i,ll find any.

They are dead easy to find Mick, when they cast their shell, they wrap them selves in cling film and jump into tackle shop freezers to get their new shell to harden up. All you do is walk into the tackle shops and buy them.

That's about as much as I know about collecting them, wish I did know more!

when we were lads we used to get bucket fulls of them at low-tide in the wear estuary area from mid-march onwards. there was also a great place where we could dig silver-ragworms,but that was a long time ago and everythings changed since then.peeler-crab is going to be my secret weapon this year here in denmark! nobody uses it,not many know they exist so i might win the coastal comps. catching flatties and cod

have found large doggers peeling in feb in the blyth but not many. this may interest you, an article appeared in sea angler mag many years ago. it told you how to bring crabs on to peel. it involved taking some tweazers and pulling there eye stalks out. this released a chemical in the crab which made it peel! unfortunatly someone from the animal rites read the article and didnt take to kindly to it.[cant blame him!] funny there wasnt a follow up the next months issue. anyone remember it?

a remember that one think it was feb 88.
well a lad from nearby tried it,went and collected 50 big doggers from the river,removed the eye stalks,put in tanks and the next morning guess what.all dead.no wonder there wasnt a follow on the next month.
if i remember right you were supposed to burn the stalks and that was what made them moult again.that didnt bloody work for the lad either,think he tried about all the miths.
