peeler crab (bringing on)

i have tried diffrent methods of bringing on peelers so they are popping out of there shell...

how do u bring urs on

takes about a week for mine to pop left in a warm garage in sea water with an areator in a 4ft tank

is there a quicker method/methods?

im not too clued up on crab

With regards to bringing crab on, I don\'t think there is a fast way of making them peel. Too much heat and they die, too cold and they shut down (lower their metabolic rate). A colleague is working with them at the moment and he says aerating the water is probably the best way. So I guess the answer is keep on doing what you are doing at the present.

A few years ago I experimented with snipping the eyestalks, the hormone that initiates the moult in females is located in the eyestalk, by cutting it, the hormone is released, and initiates the peeling process. Unfortunately out of 500 crabs only 5% actually peeled, and this may have been as a result of a naturally induced process rather than eyestalk snipping. Its a rather unpleasant thing to do anyway and only works with female crabs.

I have just arrived back from Spain where it only took the wife three days to peel :(
- before anyone asks, I didn\'t snip her eyestalks :exclam:

How about trying some sunshine, maybe they will just take their jackets off ;)
 
If i have to bring crabs on for fishing i put them in a carrier bag with a drop of water in and put it in the garage the bag keeps them moist and this seems to work for me. I have not tried this on a large scale in the shop as i just put the crabs in water with a pump
 
All i do with my crab is keep them in clean water with plenty of oxygen. I have a few tanks running at the moment you can buy a 4 outlet pump for £20 from most good pet shops and some crap ones too. I think what the key is, is to get plenty oxygen in the water.
 
had about a dozen crabs left last night which weren\'t quite ready and tried that idea from Billy and it seems to be working. Most will be ready tomorrow I would think and I\'ve only lost one.
 
the carrier bag keeps them moist and the tempreture is up just a little bit in the garage and they do pop. oryou can put the carrier in the warmer part of your fridgeif you want to bring them on slower
 
Hi guys we keep them in a tray in the fridge, on a low temp so its not to cold.
just put a little sea water in the bottom and every day or 2 put them in a bucket of sea water for 10 min then back in tray with a little of the water agian and back in the fridge.
this works for us but you got to keep doing this or they die if left to long with out new water, or with out a good drink in the bucket.

dosent the cold of the fridge slow the whole peeling process down???

last week i have had them in a tray with news paper soaked in sea water and left on the garage floor (that gets quiet warm when the sun is on the roof)
and have had quit a few with there backs hanging off
i just give them a quick spray with a atomiser to keep them damp.

then i have either frozen them or used them ;)
 
it works with us and keeps them alive for longer, and each time we sort them a few have back coming off. but i have not tryed any other way but it works for us. :D
 
All done with that carry on / all cling wrapped and blast frozen / now in a my garage freezer, but agree with the giving them a GOOD drink of CLEAN sea water on the pump - to bring them on - any that do happen to die i just freeze them whole (shell on ) and use them when i am pleasure fishing mixed with whatever . :P
