outboard help

all these ideas sound like my bag o cr@p 25hp mariner it runs at decent pace on a flat sea but yet when it gets a wee bit choppy it wants to cut in and take off at proper speed and cut out :o i know the way its running when slow its not right and using twice as much fuel at this pace any ideas lads

this is the right speed im sure it shud be doing port logan last summer ... but on a nice flat day the day before east tarbet at the mull it didnt go that fast pmsl

Hi mate you might have checked this but if its any help when you first open the throttle you only advance the timing on the flywheel then your carbs open if your timing's wrong it will stall when the load comes on the prop , sometimes the coils breakdown it will have 3 on a 3 pot run it as hard as it will go and check the plugs they should be dry if 1 is wet its not firing on that pot hope you get it sorted for the summer

hi joe-m
I had thought about the timing, and am currently trying to get a timing strobe to check it. All 3 pots are firing well, but i also noted the last time i checked it that there was a dark wet substance on the plugs, but i am sure it was on all 3 and therefore thought it was unspent fuel or oil?
Thanks

Hi it will be oil, if you are running at the right mix on that engine probably 50:1 unless it is oil injected they often get oily at low speed that,s why 2 strokes don't like trolling much the newer models are a lot better but running at decent revs they should be a light sandy brown and dry check you have got the right temperature range a cold plug will oil up check the number on the plug is right, take the hood off and check that when you first open the throttle only the timing moves you can see the linkage move then the carbs should start to open good luck
