Good thread
I started back in the early 1960's on the north side of the river. You could fish a lot more places then.
LLyods Jetty
The Government jetty. (were the life boat moors now)
The fish quay proper - just watch out for the boats
Frasers ships chandlers - rebuilt as Rubber Company
I still remember (and it still makes my stomach churn) I was fishing with my dad, I would be about 11 at Frasers. The fishing gear was rather chunky in those days. I had a solid glass 8 ft rod with a Penn Surfmaster 150 (birthday prezzie) with 30lb line on going to a "shark catching size" three way swivel with lighter line to the hook and weight.
Well there used to be a cable strung between two bouys and I actually managed to cast over the cable and got the weight wrapped round it. So I did the normal thing, wound the line tight and walked backwards (I could see the weight). With the sound of a rifle crack the traces snapped the the swivel came back at mach 1 and hit me in the left nut. I went down like a sack of tatties. Gawd that really hurt I can tell you and I didn't help that everyone was falling about laughing including my dad as he had offered to snap it off for me.
To this day I always break off snags with my back to the water
