Even with the conditions being less than ideal me and my mate journeyed up the coast. Nice little roll on when we got there and no wind. My mate was first in with a doggy of about 3lb. I had a huge knock which pulled the rod stand over. Landed a lovely 4lb 4oz pollack on the first chuck. Really fought hard all the way in. Next chuck the bait was in the water about 2 minutes when exactly the same thing happened. Tod pulled out the tripod. Only difference was this fish kept going for the bottom, hard. Was shocked ehen i got it in to see a strapy ling of over 3lb in the waves. After a quick photo it went back. As darkness came i had some nice knocks and ending up with a codling of just over 3lb. My mate managed another doggy. We both bumped fish off near the end. Mine felt about the same stamp as the codling i brought in earlier. All in all a bizzare day with summer species in November! Chuffed with 2 new shore PB's for the Pollack and the Ling. pictures on the locker my photo account for this site isn't working

Cracking session m8 well done .If you were fishing craster/the haven area then Ling ,strap conger Pollock even conger are not so rare this time of year

a couple of cracking pictures of these specimans as broon shoes says these are not rare in winter ,conger to thirtylb and Pollock into double figures are often caught up craster way with dunsterborough a hot shot. davy.

Good session, well done again on the ling.
personally I still think they are a rare catch, never seen any reports and don't know if any of the big matches have weighed them in, although I am probably wrong,
There was the big conger reported from Howick area a few year back not long after the big conger reported from Tynemouth area(I think). conger are very rare in the boats (on rods) never mind shore caught.
in the 40 year I have fished the NE coast, very often around that area I can count on 1 hand how many ling I have heard been caught between Hartlepool and Amble, with none by myself and mates including fishing the opens with hundreds of anglers.
anyhow if its a rare catch, big well done, if its not rare.....canny fish....

Mid to late 1980s, starting out fishing as a lad with my granda we used to catch Ling up to a couple of lbs quite regularly from the beach at Blackhall. That said they do seem to be a very rare catch nowadays

That's when thornbacks were not so rare on our beaches as well and spurdogs were a regular catch in the boats..............and the cabins used to be at the bottom of Pironis at blackhall and at the cliffs at Mucky Bay at Horden.............and lets not forget the beaches were alive fires all over, with anglers right along the coast at all hours and landrovers and bedfords getting coal day and night................ fond memories.....

steve Williams caught a large conger in an open acouple of years ago from swine dene craster,they pop up quite regular every year from that area,have caught 3 small ling from craster and eyemouth last year and this year,small ling are regularly caught in club matchs at eyemouth and st abbs. davy.
Couple of decent Thornbacks caught off Horden this last week marra, be nice if the rare species could once again show up more often

yes they have been showing the last few years, in the boat on the rods as well. i'd rather have the coal beaches back tho

I fish Northumberland a lot and admittedly these fish are not caught as frequently as once were but I still think there is plenty caught like said not so rare I talk to plenty anglers from the area and not all go on these fishing forums just because there not reported doesn't mean there not there and being caught there are lots of anglers out there who don't want you to know

Nice one mate, as has been said, they don't turn up all the time, but they do turn up!
Had this one, my first ling from the shore last october in a club match on Whitley Pipe - 2lb 7oz but a couple of cm under the 63cm limit so couldn't weigh it in (gutted
).....probably the only 2 & a half-pounder I could get that would be undersize lol!! Only ever seen one other at a weigh-in.
