it was a conger eel mate , ive fished up at whithorn and 2 of my mates had conger and know what they look like , i was suprised when i got it , they recon that there is conger under the south pier......

A Conger's upper jaw extends further than the lower jaw, and it's dorsal fin starts at the pectoral fin. A Common's lower jaw extends further than the upper, and it's dorsal fin starts further down it's back. Sorry, I can't help you with the difference between a Cod and a Ling!

There are definately Conger around South Shields pier. The NESA comp was won two years ago by a small one of about 4 1/2 lb.
The reason we don't get that many from this coast is, we don't target them.

I had a similar conversation with MikeR a while ago. If there are 4 1/2lb congers around South Sheilds Pier for example, then there is a very good chance that there are bigger ones, i.e the 4 1/2lber's mummy and daddy.
But like say Jim, they don't really get targeted in the NE. Few people, myself included, would drop a mackerel flapper in close off South Shields Pier or any other NE mark. I seem to recall some decent congers being caught at Cullercoats, maybe my memory is going the same way as my hearing.
Even small congers pull back pretty strongly and they are a good fish to catch.

I hooked something at Cullernose a few years ago that I couldn't stop. It didn't take off like a smoothie, just trundled out slow and steady but could I hell slow it down. It eventually bit me off.
There's been some caught at Beadnell amongst other places, didn't Gav Owen have a good one not long ago.
Like Jim says, no one ever targets them.

I've had this conversation so many times before ,what about the fish quay ,there must be some down there as well ,I'm the same as most ,never targetted them and probably never will ..... probably .
