Gordon Grear almost swept the board in the 344 entry Newbiggin Open, fishing at the Old Pipe End at Whitley Bay Gordon landed four codling for 13lb 6oz 2 drams to take the overall first prize of £1,000, and the superpool. Gordon’s bag also included the heaviest fish of the match, a cod of 7lb 2oz 8 drams, which he almost lost as it got stuck in the rocks, however after a few nervous moments Gordon was able to retrieve the fish. And along with fishing partner Brian Clennell they won the team event with 17lb 4oz 4 drams. All that alluded Gordon was the heaviest flatfish prize which went to Raymond Gibson with a flounder of 1lb 8drams. The junior prize went to Kieran Arnold who did very well to take a codling and a coalfish for 2lb 6oz 12 drams, another junior twelve year old Chloe Tilmouth, fishing in only her second competition, won the ladies section with two coalfish for 1lb 12oz 4 drams taken from Lynemouth Beach, Chloe’s prize of a £50 voucher going towards a pair of waders so her mother doesn’t complain when she gets dirty digging bait. Paul Medd was second overall with four cod and two coalfish for 9lb 1oz 4 drams taken at Church Point, with Martyn Pygall third with three cod for 8lb 15oz 10 drams. Trevor Ferry sportingly shock Gordons hand after his cod of 6lb 2 oz 12 drams was pushed into second place in the heaviest fish category.
