multi or spinning when at anchor

Hi lads,
I am looking for any opinions for new set up when at anchor. (not uptiding because its fishing out of the back and side of the boat)
I have been using multipliers for years now, (Abu 8000C) when fishing at anchor.
The depths are normally between 30 to 70 feet and on rough ground.

I stopped using braid a long while ago and went to mono because i found braid was a bit fierce when reeling a fish in, maybe had something to do with the rods as well, but mono is definitely a gentle fight.

I am buying a new blank, 9-10 foot, something like 4-8oz, 5-10 oz and for a few months now have been thinking of using a spinning reel.
i want to get some further info because when the rod gets built, this determines the ring sizes and where in relation to the spine of the blank the rings are put on.
if i go with a spinner, it willl be a small to medium size, not a great big egg beater. i will be looking at around 175-200 yards of 20 mono, size.

does anyone use spinning reels when at anchor, likes and dislikes over a multiplier.
do they lock up when a decent fish is on
braid or mono preference
do you get much line twist when in shallow water
any particular make and model

Thought i'd ask for any thoughts / opinions, maybe give people something to read while the reports are dead.

I would just use a hand line for the fish you catch.its a lot cheaper :red:

This winter season has been a waste, this bl00dy work lark is no good.
was thinking of a Fin Nor spinner, LT60 Lethal, dunno yet.

Oh........did you get that latex mankini you were fancying,........... you'll look mint in purple, it wont show the stains either..............

Paul when I first started back with boat fishing I tried fixed spool reels. I found the bail arm couldn't cope and when LYNN caught a decent fish it locked up.

Having said that we were not using a Fin Nor!! :)

don't think i'd fancy bringing anything decent up with a fixed spool, too cumbersome I find on a boat, I think even pike fishermen use small multis on a boat. just my thought , others may find them ok.

Thanks for the replies Mark / Alcaucin,

that is one of my thoughts on locking up, any line twist, but when you look at the number of shore anglers using FS for bigger casting and leading to nice bags, the size of fish anglers catch with carp and pike, and the yanks using them on the fighting fish,

i just don't know, i am blowing hot and cold on the subject.

its not so much biting the bullet on a reel, its do i ring the blank for multi or ring it for spinner.

Paul can't you ring it for both? Probably a stupid question but I didn't know there was different rings for fived spools and multis? I had heard of different rings for mono and braid - and I don't undertand that either! :red:

You can wear a different dress for different occasions....or just wear a kilt for all...

I personally think, it is personal preference which reel you use.

There have been fish caught on fixed spools well above 100 lb and multiplyers used for whitings and mackerel.
They have used fixed spools for Waller catfish, Carp, Sturgeon etc.

I personally would not want to use fixed spool for tuna trolling.

I use a 2 Speed Lever drag, non level wind multiplyer on the wrecks (Saltist) and like it.

both

both

Its already been said get it rung for both. I use a fixed spool of the back of the boat with out any problems, much easier to lob a bait out as that is all it usually takes. also use a multi on the same rods ,

Paul, I,ve been using fixed spools on lazy daze inshore and wrecks, only down to 150ft as thats about as far as I venture out most times. I now use a penn, and a Ryobe always with braid from 30lb-50lb on sonik 12-20lb and 20-30lb ringed for multipliers I think. Just how they came out the shop.
Still can't understand why people say they can't turn the handle with a fish on, lift the rod and wind as you lower the rod, you can reel in big fish with the cheapest of reels using this method, just set the clutch, hook the fish, listen to the line pulling against the clutch as the fish fights back, you,ll love it.

Arthur is spot on about using the rod to lift the fish and then wind in the line. I’ve done that with small fixed spool reels landing big salmon; if they can manage that with a fish in a flowing river then pumping a fish up from the depths in open water shouldn’t be a problem.

On the deeper wrecks I wouldn’t be without a good lever drag reel, but for the smaller fish inshore, I’ve swapped to a baitrunner fixed spool reel last year. And don’t like it! :) Contrary of what? It’s nowhere near as smooth as a multi so this year I’m going to try an abu 6500 and 7000 reel. I might even try the 2000 sized FS for spinning and shadding over the rough ground in less than 80ft of water.

The Chinese braid feels very rough on my FS reel unlike Fireline or the thinner Whiplash so it’s worth considering lines too –not much of a problem for you if you’re going to fish with mono.

The only advantage I can see of using a fixed spool on a boat is better casting. Yes they will lift up big fish but personally I refer a multi. I suppose at anchor they are useful but I would still prefer a small multi

Hi Canman,
I agree"this locking up" in my opinion is down to the anglers style, not letting the rod work, consequently the reel is struggling.

i had a thought about it, but as i mentioned big fish are caught on FS reels.

i look at when the (dare i say it) when the Macks are in, I use a 12 foot bass rod and a small Penn FS, i use 3 feathers when not spinning and no problem.
When a string of 6 feathers are shot and a full house of fighting maks, usually balled up, are on, there's no problem, that rod just takes it with ease and the reel doesn't batter an eye lid. great sport with a float as well.

There's a little fat bloke comes out, permanent crew, thinks nowt of balling up with a full house of 12, thats 2 strings together !!!, blood all over, bloody riot, takes half an hour to get them off and has to hoy the feathers away, or spend an hour untangling them.

so no real fears about a FS for fishing on the peg, just that i've used a multi for years and wondered on other peoples thoughts, and something to read if you know what i mean.

lets not forget that when at anchor a good fish is 8-9lb cod, majority are smaller, some bigger, not like 20lb of fighting muscle coming up every cast.

So i have few options, which isnt just the rings, its the position of the rings if i want the most from the blank.

ring size it for multiplier, with guides on the spine of the blank

ring size it for FS with the guides 180 degrees to the spine (probably only the bottom 2 rings will be a bigger size than a multi set up, the rest are he same)

ring it either way and use it for both.
buy 2 blanks and ring them for both(bugger that, that is tackle tarting unless i'm drunk and go shopping !!!)

So I just don't know, decisions decisions.....
if 5h!ts cat is reading what do you reakon, oh mighty fat lad....multi or FS

Thanks again Arthur

Paul

I have a an old beach rod which has a screw on bottom ring. the foot of the ring is whipped on and you screw on the ring. I guess there will be different sizes to suit. Not sure if you can still get them now. I take it ,that it would be the first ring you are concerned about.

heres what I mean

they're antique, used to be on a lot for rods many tides ago. that was when it was Scarboros and Alveys, then the likes of the Penn squidders, Mitchels and the infamous SEASTREAKS came along, they were intrepid.

i had a Abu 535 when i was a youngun, i think that had one on.
First ring for a multi will be a #20 or #16 then #12, 10.........

for FS #25 then #16, 12........

Depends on the reel size, rod length and how far down the butt the reel seat is, probably 12" up from the butt, as i fish low reels seats,
That way i have all of the rod in front, nowt between the legs or past your elbow, if you know what i mean.

Kev
if i go fixed spool its at anchor in the depths mentioned, wouldn't be without my multipliers on the wrecks.

Braid, i have used Berkely Powerpro at 1500yds spools at a time from the states (bit pricey now), ever since i have used braid.

I find it good for me. It lasts ages, doesn't open up, this 4 strand PE, although i did buy a spool of spectra from china, thats still in the wrapper.
but thats for the wrecks only, mono goes on when at anchor, multi or FS.

cheers

Paul

sure are, but served a purpose, wonder if anyone has thought of a more modern design that would suit todays reels. But rods are cheap by comparison and much better value today. Probably no need for them. I started with a surf cast reel before getting a penn squidder from Embassy fag vouchers and then a seastreak followed by Abu 7000 and abu atlantic zoom I still have all except the surfcast

Yes Paul, bit of a dilemma for you. I can only say that fishing in the depths of water you are referring to, you will be just letting the line run off the spool with just the weight of the lead and bait taking line off at a reasonable speed, i don't foresee any bunching problems in a rod ringed for a multiplier, with mono, and certainly not for braid. One other point, using mono, go for a limp line, as it won't spring off the spool as much.
whatever you decide to do, good luck.:)
