Mull of Galloway - The recce...

i have the same dilema, the little rod is much more fun and far easier to climb the rocks with, but i'd luv to get some doggies and conger.

Good stuff mate, you wouldn't have got me near those cliffs never mind climbing them though, eek!

That's just what I think every time I see trip reports from the Mull - it looks and sounds fantastic, but I wouldn't fancy the climb one little bit!

not all the marks are a mountain climb...the second mark we fished was more of a rocky scramble LOL

A lot of them look much worse on photographs too mind, when you get close and plan your way down sometimes it is a lot easier, not always though lol.

Where would people fish at night?
We stayed at Sands of Luce campsite and had a beach just yards from us..........great we thought, this would be great for fishing at night when we got back from M O G. Tony and Phil checked it out and said it looked good so after some scran we got all our gear sorted and headed onto the beach.....................NO SEA.............it was miles out! Walked down to it and with a bit of concern from me we baited up and chucked out. I waded in and after well over 100 yards the water was still just over me feet within no time it had raced out even further and my bait was now lying on the sand This had me worried as i've always been told it comes in a lot faster than it goes out so with this in mind and the fact we were miles down the beach we decieded to give up. We had a look at a beach along the road for a couple of casts but after snagging up on every cast we gave up for the night.

Great report lads, you got the weather aswell !! are you sure that you's went to the Mull ???.. I've mentioned a few good pointers for anyone visiting the area and believe me over time you'll see what i'm saying does benefit all those hours of wasted fishing when you should be catching instead of blanking read on...

When i first visited the Mull of Galloway it was total guess work where to go fishing. Like alot of people who visit the area, they end up down on the Lighthouse point which is not for the screamish believe me. This mark does produce but other places can be just as good without the heart attack of getting down there.. It is an effort to get down and a hell of a stagger back up.Especially when you've got more gear then 'buckaroo'..I learned of better marks to fish with out the need to go mountain 'goating' down cliffs. If you talk to the locals they are good with info on where to go and what type of fishing suits the area.Most of the places i fish are relatively flat walks and believe me the fishing is just as good without the exhaustion.Picking the state of tide and time is a good way to success rather then blanking. The pollack fishing is quite poor on bright sunny days (even the boats do badly when its like this) if the tide coincides with dusk going into darkness the pollack are suicidal. Fishing with 'Black' artificial sandeels in darkness they are caught literally a fish a cast and the bigger the sandeel the bigger the fish.You want to concentrate on relatively deep water rock marks for this type of fishing..Some of the beaches are good in darkness Sandhead, Ardwell bay,Maryport bay and Terally Bay are all generaly good for bottom fishing.If the doggies are biting they do become a pain after a while but at least your fishing and you can sometimes be rewarded with bonus fish like Bass, Pollack, Codling ,Coalies and various flats.I tend to stick to worm baits either rag or lug sometimes cocktailed with fish baits. These are my tried and tested methods give them a go.. Good Luck..

Try using a 9ft 6" - 10ft Uptider that will cast small weights 2oz -6oz ..When your done with your spinning and float fishing.Swap over for a heavyier lead 5oz and try a bit of bottom ledgering..

We were staying at Sandhead but the beach was only a foot deep and the tide was WAAAAAY out - when is the best time to fish it?...we also ventured up to Ardwell...again tide was out...

We're gonna head back in a month or so...reckoning on squeezing it into a day trip (geet long drive for someone )...either one or two cars...either way there should be spaces...

Me and a mate are going to head over there on Friday for a day trip. We've been to Port Logan cod fishing before but we want to try some float fishing and spinning on the Mull.

Since this is a trip we just planned today we are researching like crazy to find out tactics and marks so any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Did you get a tide book for the area ?
Both marks are best fish with a bit of a sea on, big tides over HW the sea bombs out at Sandhead.You only get a couple of hours fishing unless the wind holds the sea back.After a Southerly/South easterly blow.The back of the caravan site has a small fresh water stream that runs onto the beach.If you see it when the tide goes out a sandbank is cut out in front of the stream.fish the bank of the sandbank at HW.I've had some good sessions here for Bass.Ardwell is a good shot fishing the beach at HW or a walk to the left of the rocks keep walking round and you'll find a flat stretch of rocks fish 3 hrs either side of LW float fishing with sandeel or ragworm for Wrasse and Pollack or spinning with red gills.fishing in darkness can give you the edge,and Terally Bay is a good shot at night if you want to go doggie bashing..This mark is 100% better fished in the dark.It does produce during the day but night time is much better.

I would say get yourself an O/S map for the area...then take a ganders here...Mull of Galloway, Fishing Marks

As to tactics - personally I prefer fishing light (float/spinners/jellies etc) , but if you can be bothered to carry the extra gear a rock rod may produce the goods

then read any of the info peeps have given in this thread coz some of it is very good...
