I am just starting off Coarse fishing from Sea and have at last bought enough gear to go for a chuck. Anyway I was out walking the dog with my Mrs yesterday and passed the lake behind the Cock Crow Inn in Hebburn and thought it looked like a canny place for a chuck. Does anyone know much about the lake? Is it free to fish as it looks like its on council or public land! If not does it belong to a local club?

when I used to fish it around 20 year ago I think it was a free water:D. Later it was taken over by the big water club I think. I do know that about 5 year ago you did need a permit to fish it but not sure what club. Anyway when I fished it perch were the main species in there, goodins too. Carp and Tench appeared later and rumour had it that ppl were taking fish out of the lakeside ponds and hoying them in the place so only god knows what's in there now. Try ringing South Tyneside Council recreation department and they may help, if yer lucky. Good luck anyways mate

Great advice, Thanks.

Do any of you lads know if the Lakeside Club is still running?

Don't know mate but access used to be via the lakeside boozer which is now fenced off so fellgate estate will be the way in.
Again, many years ago I used to fish there, the big lake was a stocked trout water and you had to pay at a little hut perched on the bank, the small lake was coarse fish and yer could get a day ticket from behind the bar for 2 squid:D. Fishing was excellent with commons, leathers, bream, roach, perch, rudd and there was a prolific head of chub. If chub are in hebburn quarry now then they almost certainly came from there I reckon. Had some great seshes at the lakeside with good bags of chub at a good stamp and carp nearly to double figures, memories ehh:)

The lakeside club used to meet every month at the Robin Hood pub. I was a member some years ago and have had some lovely fish out of red barns lake as it was known including tench to over 5lb on the pole ( great fun ) and some great bags of roach and perch . Not sure if the club is still running and it was cheap to join but the lake is Gateshead councils if I remember correctly .
Spend a buy time googling red barns and lakeside angling and you should find some information .
Good luck and tight lines
P.s.if you need any help with course fish giz a shout and I'll give you a hand and some tips .

Thanks mate. I may just take you up on that!

I know both these lakes are fished and there are good carp in both . The quarry is the nicer lake to fish and i am led to believe you dont need a ticket . The carp in here are very shy and it does take some effort to hook one . There are plenty of nice size roach and tench to keep you busy .
The lake side belongs to a farmer i think but he has given up on it . People gain access from a hole in the bushes on the main road . There are some good fish in there but it is not a nice place to fish .It looks like shields pier in august .There seems to be a stream of young ones coming down to smoke dope and enough beer cans to fill a skip. Best doing dawn fishing in summer there and then getting away .
If looking for somewhere nice to try have a look at alden grange near durham ,
not far ,good price, and it is spotless .
