Killing fish

Reet - well I know how I'll be dealing with my catches from now on.

I do think however that preaching about the suffering of fish (in any way) is hypocritical - especially considering what we as anglers do.

Has anyone else out there any thoughts?

Funnily enough I have -

No-one has preached, merely given correct advice known for eons by all responsible anglers

To consider the feelings of one's quarry and empathise with their right to life and struggle for survival is not hypocritical, it is human, respectful and the least we should do.

To ignore the realities of what our "Hobby" involves is just that "IGNORANCE"

On the question of morality...

On the question of morality...

Is it right to hammer the mackerel off the piers?

It seems to me that there a lot of mackerel being caught - which is good coz I'm going to go out and have a go myself at some point.

But surely pulling in over 30/40/50 of them is a tad excessive?

Unless of course you have dietary needs or indeed if you are a charter skipper in need of bait - or maybe even if you are intending to flog them.

But I have a feeling that some people are catching that many just becuase they can - like shooting fish in a barrel

Hi Great, you don't mind if I call you Great do you ;) :D.

The question of Mackerel and the amount taken arises every year. Last year some **** left a load of dead Mackerel on the pier when he went home. That sort of thing does wonders for our sport, and why did he do it, because he could. I have a mate that I used to fish with regular and he went mad one day at a couple of our so called top match anglers that were catching Mackerel on Blyth pier and just throwing them in a bucket to die slowly.

A lot of problems arise from ignorance and a lot more arise from stupid people that think they know. We have all seen them.

Jim.

Like it or not Angling involves a certain adrenaline rush - hunting and that. Couple this with huge amounts of amazing fish within spitting distance of shore on a coastline that in winter throws up very few fish. It's going to go daft. I don't join in these days but catching mackerel was one of my first ever experiences of sea angling and gets many kids into it. If you're going to use 40-50 fish then take them no probs. this is nothing compared to the Tons of mackerel (adult and juvenile) hoovered up by factory ships. The summer shore mackerel frenzy has no long term effects on the mackerel population.

Now if you were put on a superb drift time and time again by a great skipper over a productive wreck and kept on catching superb fish where would this come on the fish in a barrell scale. Should you stop fishing there as it's unfair?

As to fishing the "perfect drift" the same question of morality applies....I'm keen to go boat fishing at some point but how many skippers operate catch and release?

When I see the picture of a guy with a 5ft 20lb Ling I ask myself "is he gonna eat all that fish?"

Do the skippers keep a percentage of the catch for sale? or do the lads keep everything they catch?

what you dont need put back

what you dont need put back

;) the best way to keep fish alive is before you go fishing is to get a small file and blunt the barb on the hook even if it gets off its a life saved but 9 times out of 10 they still come to you and if the hooks right down its neck its so easy 2 get out so try it if yah just fishing for fun and you never know you might catch that same fish 5 years later

A good point John, I tend to flatten my barbs with some pointy nosed plyers when I am spinning. As you say, if you want to release them it is the easiest way.

Welcome to NESA mate, I missed your last post.

Jim.

I must apologise a bit - I think a lot about the ins and outs of fishing and these are all valid questions about pain and power and greed and animal rights :o and all that. I've voiced similar thoughts on here before. No 2 ways about it we are messing with fish and they don't like it. I got over that fact, call me evil!

The chance to brain a fish and rip it's guts out would be a fine thing for me right now. Slippery little *******s

This is a great thread in true NESA tradition ,there've been some great points raised ,most of which I've found myself nodding away as I read them ,a great debate ,we all respect our quarry ,well I like to think we all do , personally I've waited so long for my doubler that I've made a pact with Norman that if it does come then I want the release on video for the site.:)

its simple if you dont want to eat the fish you catch use barbless hooks and a disgorger .
from a boat simply un hook and relese the fish
but the thing is steve you might let a doubler fish go whats stopping the next boat from knocking it on the heed .
the quickest and less painless way to kill a fish you want to keep is a slice behind the head
belive me it wont flap around much after that (iff it do its the motor instincts of the fish it wont last long)

When it comes to quality eating fish that are worth keeping then I'm sure most will agree that the two to six pound range ,maybe even five pounds taste better than a bigger fish and in my book I'd rather see them swim off .
